S/O my post yesterday about nesting...

I cleaned out my entire pantry today.  It was HORRIBLE.  I'm a really good meal planner now but I used to not budget for groceries and make tons of impulse purchases.  I had boxes of brownies that you make with yogurt from 2009, microwaveable puches of lentils from Trader Joe's that seemed like a great idea at the time...I threw away SO MUCH STUFF.

I can now see what I have in my pantry.  And my garbage/recycling guys are going to hate me tomorrow :P.

Go me.

  • I feel you sister. I know that purging feeling and totally get a contact high just reading about yours!
  • My husband cleaned out our pantry a few weekends ago. He found a bag of Rice-A-Roni dating back to 2003. Two-thousand and three, folks. He and I didn't even meet until 2004 and Hell, I didn't even move out of my parent's place until 2004 either. We have no idea where it came from.

  • I did that the other day.. I was so bummed about having to take all that food out to the dumpster. I had the genius idea to just put it in the hallway with a free sign (I live in an apartment) and people took everything! Yay!
  • I am going through major nesting mode these days.  I cleaned out our entire freezer and found the majority had expired.  It felt great to actually see what was in our freezer and what I need to buy and not buy at the grocery store this week.  I love when it is organized and I can see everything we have.  I also organized the cupboard above the pantry which was a mess and threw out some old expired stuff plus I threw out some old bags that I had no idea why we were saving.  I will be organizing our pantry and fridge next on my list.  I also organized my whole office at work last week I love working in a clean office with not so much paperwork around me.  I am feeling more accomplished at work now and have a couple of projects that I found that I want to finish before I go out on maternity leave.  I am taking advantage of this nesting mode I am in since I know it won't last.

  • We try to do a clean out once a month because of an incident a few years ago. Basically when my still-married parents, sis and I moved in 1994, we moved into a house with a fancy pantry room. Cool beans. In 2009, years after the divorce and my parents remarriage, my grandmother passed away. My H and I decided we'd help out my mom, and cleaned out their pantry and fridge (they'd left in a hurry and been gone about a month as my grandma went through hospice, passed away and they closed out her home) and stock them up with milk, eggs, etc.

Well in the process of cleaning out the pantry, we found one of those WB jars with banana sauce- never opened. Expired in 1993. As in, we MOVED with it expired. The sauce was BROWN- like poop brown. And there was a bottle of Midori from the year I was born (83)- open. Also poop brown. So, we overhauled and didn't get the last bag over to the dump before they came home. My stepfather FREAKED when he saw the banana sauce- unopened- in the trash. He took it out and ate a spoonful to prove it was "just fine". Let's just say Baby will not be eating there without our direct supervision. EWWWWWW

  • Pantry cleaning is on my to do list too.  and I am also scared of how much I will throw away.  I also went a little crazy buying some nifty storage things from the container store.
