Working Moms

Opinions needed Ladies

Hi Ladies,

I'm not sure how to handle this or if I should just let it go.  My mom takes care of DD fulltime while I am at work but every Wednesday DD is with my inlaws.  Since they go away on vacation a lot, it's not even every week that she's there.  She's only there on Wednesday's when they are home.  Anyway, my father in law always has the tv on.  He doesn't put it on for her, he just puts on whatever he wants to watch.  I never ever put the tv on and it bothers me that sometimes what he has on isn't really appropriate.  Last week when I picked her up he had some show on about criminals.  Or Law and Order.  I'm not sure how to handle it since it's their house.  I feel uncomfortable telling them they can't watch tv in their own house.  Also,  she's only going to be there like 5 more times since I am a teacher and I will be off for the summer soon.

Re: Opinions needed Ladies

  • How old is she?

Will she be there again starting in the fall?

  • I wouldn't worry about it. To me, it's not worth rocking the boat.  As long as they are not plopping her down for 10 hours in front of the TV.  A little bit of exposure is not going to hurt her.

  • I'd let it go, especially because they'll only watch her a couple of more times.  I don't know how old your DD is, but I know mine doesn't pay much attention when the tv is on unless it's Dora or some cartoon.

Plus, I would have a hard time telling my FIL he can't watch his shows because they're watching my daughter for me....

  • I'd let it go.  Shows like Law and Order aren't that bad.  If it was, say, The Walking Dead or something else with a lot of gore and violence, ok maybe.  But like a PP said, I'd have a really hard time telling them not to watch TV when they're watching my child for me.  A little TV exposure isn't going to hurt LO.  It's plopping them down and never engaging them in play or other activities that does it.

  • You don't say how old your LO is, but if she actually watching the TV? My MIL has soap operas on and LO doesn't care for them at all and will play with his toys while it's on.

She just turned one.  (Sorry.  I never did figure out how to put a ticker up for her age.)

I'm not sure yet about the fall.

  • For a 12 month old, I would let it slide (esp because it's family) -- she's probably not really looking at it anyway. If you're going to be doing this all next year, then I would have a not-a-baby-anymore talk, but I'd wait until the fall to have it.

  • Not worth mentioning if she's only going to be there 5 more times. Let it go.
