Ferber ?

So DH and I are officially ready to begin sleep training and are planning to begin using the Ferber Method Friday night. I am reading the book, but one specific thing I'm wondering about that I haven't seen addressed in the book yet is what to do is LO still eats at night. Last night when he woke up, I tried to just get him back to sleep with his paci, but after 40 mins finally just fed him. He drank a full bottle at 10:30 and 3. I really need him to learn to fall asleep on his own, but don't want to leave him hungry. I've tried upping his bottles during the day to try and get him all the calories he needs during the day, but it's hard since he goes to day care and doesn't always finish bottles. He also gets solids once a day. I guess my question is do you still feed them at night and still make sure to put them back down awake? Or let them cry and learn to eat more during the day? That seems awful and I'm not sure I could do that to him...

Re: Ferber ?

  • My LO's just started STTN a few weeks ago.  When they woke up they would drink a full bottle.  The only way I would sleep train is if they woke up and they didn't drink the whole thing.  For us it wasn't so bad because they would pretty much go right back to sleep after their bottle.

I would still feed him especially if he's taking the whole bottle and then put him right back down.  My thought is if LO is getting up and taking a full bottle then he is hungry and needs it.  How long does he go in between bottles?  Can you lessen the time in between so he takes more calories in?  Good luck and hang in there.

  • I'[m pretty sure this is addressed in the book....but I believe one thing that is recommended is slowly cut down on the # of oz you give at night to get them used to eating less at that time.

There is a whole chapter I think too in the book about it.  If not a chapter, there is a chart on how to progressively cut it down.

  • We did the Ferber method and I still do one feeding a night.  I chose a time (1:00 AM) and when my son wakes up after that time, I go in nurse him, and then put him back to bed.  It works perfectly.  He got the hang of it after the first night and wakes up once between 130 and 330 each night.  You are going to be surprised with how many fewer night-wakings you have, right from the start.  I was not a CIO fan, but my child would not stay asleep longer than 30-40 minutes ALL NIGHT LONG, and I was losing my mind.  It took him one night and 25 minutes of crying with checks, and since then he has cried no longer than 2 minutes, when he cries at all.  I realize its not quite as easy for everyone, but I am now a believer in it.  Good luck to you!

This is what I'm doing. Also, they say by 6 months, they can go up to 12 hours without eating.
