Trying to get LO to sleep in crib

What are some ways to keep baby asleep in crib? My little man has been sleeping in his sleep and play this far along but Ive been trying to work on getting him to sleep in his crib. He'll sleep in there..but only for about 15 - 30 minutes at a time. Any suggestions?

  • I am not familiar with the sleep and play, but if it has an incline, try putting some books under one end of the crib mattress to create an incline.  Then gradually remove a book or two every few nights until he is sleeping flat.  DD slept in a baby papasan for a long time, so to get her in the crib we first put the papasan in the crib so she would get used to being in her room.  After a couple of weeks we took the papasan away and did the book thing.  It was a gradual change for her, and she did a lot better this way than going in the crib cold turkey.

  • We use a music/light box to help him drift to sleep at night.  We don't do naps in the crib for now, only night sleeping.  He likes having something else to focus on in the big bed.  My pedi also said he could have a small comfort object to hold at night, and that helps with giving him something to do with his hands.  The comfort object can't be plush, and needs to be small, she said.

  • Wait until they're ready to transition is my biggest advice.

Otherwise, you might try laying down a blanket or something that smells like you as a "sheet" on the crib.  White noise.  Patting their chest/shushing when they start to stir.

Basically, if they don't want to sleep in the crib it's just going to be about them getting used to it at their own pace.  You can set the scene, but there's no real way to keep them asleep obviously.

If you can wait to transition, I would.  Go with what's working for as long as possible.  They might surprise you and let you know when they're ready.  If not, it's likely going to be an easier transition when they're a little older.  JMO :)
