Maternity Tops

I am a FTM who knows basically nothing about all this business. SO, I'm wondering if any of you experienced mommies remember when you had to switch to maternity tops. I know bottoms are usually sooner than tops but I'm not sure at which stage. We are going to Vegas in July- I'll be 19 weeks pregnant and it will be roughly 1 million degrees outside. I'm trying to plan what I need to bring to not be completely miserable and wondering if my regular tops would work at that point or if I'll be big enough to switch to maternity?

Thank you all for your help! :):):)

Re: Maternity Tops

  • I'd buy some maternity tees. At 18 weeks I had a bump.

  • I just bought a bunch from Gap Maternity, they were really cute and they had great sales!
  • Before switching to maternity, I'm going to stock up on longer tees. There are a lot of choices with the layering trend going on right now.
  • The thing to watch out for with non maternity tees is that sometimes even when they are longer, the seam along the sides will end up along the front and look kind of funny! But some people don't mind! I think you'll have a little bump by then, I would plan to bring some early maternity wear!

  • I had moved to mostly maternity tops/ pants at 17 weeks. I had a small but noticable bump.

Although I may have gone a little longer had I not been 16 to 17 weeks at Christmas. I got lots of new maternity clothes from my mom, so I jumped right in.

  • I'll be in Vegas in July too!!

I've already started browsing maternity clothes in anticipation. Although I may still be able to pull off my non maternity clothes, they will probably be tight. I'm not sure how tight and pregnant in Vegas in July will be comfortable.
  • I didn't wear many maternity tops. And the ones I did wear weren't until the very end. They just never fit me well. I mostly just bought regular shirts in the size above what I normally wear. Apparently maternity companies think that if you're pregnant you have huge arms and shoulders and everything. While I do have a larger bust, the mat shirts never fit me right. I always looked like I was wearing someone else's shirt that was too big. I even went into the hospital wearing a normal pre pregnancy shirt.

Everyone is different though. I did have a bump by that time but it still fit into my reg clothes.

  • That is a tough call. I definitely had a bump at 18 weeks but I still wore most of my regular tops - but most of my regular tops have some "give" in them and are flowy so they worked for me. However, you may want to get a couple like the kind that have ruching so they are more fitted since you won't need the bigger stuff yet by then.

  • Vegas in July?! Girl you crazy! I can't handle Vegas heat when I'm not pregnant so good luck with that. I think lots of loose cotton or linen would be best. Anything synthetic is just going to be hot and uncomfortable. I'm going to go through my wardrobe at the weekend and store anything I know I won't be able to wear over the summer. Thankfully I favour loose fitting clothes anyway so won't have to buy too much.
  • Around 18-20 weeks.    Yesterday I was thinking 20, but I remember wearing maternity clothes to my A/S, and that was around 19.
