Dehydration

L has been sick with a nasty stomach virus since sat. She saw the doctor today and they said to keep an eye on her and if she was getting worse call them and bring her back. She's thrown up a little less today but she also stopped drinking at 6pm. She just wants to sleep. Is ok to let her go all night without fluid? I just tried to wake her up to drink something and she freaked out. Hubby thinks we should just wait until the am. I'm terrified that she'll get dehydrated and worse if she sleeps al night without any fluid. She has a fever of about 100.8. I'm ready to call the peditirian service an have them paged. He says I'm overreacting. What would u do??

Re: Dehydration

  • Personally, I would probably let her sleep at this point.  If I tried to wake my LO when she was that tired and then tried to force her to drink...it'd be nothing but a horrible drama.  And I probably wouldn't be successful getting any fluids in her anyway.

However, I might reconsider that depending on how much/little she had to drink throughout the day.  It's really hard to say.

  • I'd let her sleep and just give a bunch of pedialyte tomorrow.  Was she dehydrated today during the day (eyes sunk in, not peeing, really yellow pee?)  If not, then I wouldn't worry about it.  100.something isn't that much of a fever and she can make up for it tomorrow.  Does she usually wake up at night to drink?

  • I would let LO sleep. Sleep is restorative, if LO wakes up, then give water or pedialite if she'll drink it.

Do call if it makes you feel better. I know I end up calling the advice nurse often.
  • If she drank til 6pm then I'd just let her sleep. If she wakes up, give her something to drink otherwise just let her body heal by sleeping
