Parenting after a Loss

Grrr...shots...and scales...

DS had his first shots today at his two month check up.  He cried when he got the three shots, but I was able to pick him right up and calm him down.  He settled down pretty quickly.   The doctor warned me that A could be fussy later and maybe run a small fever.

At thsi same appointment, they gave me a weight of 7.13 lbs- .2 lbs lower than he'd been at breastfeeding group last Tuesday.  I know different scales can give different weights, but that seemed way off, since he should be at least 8.5lbs if his weight gain was going as it had been.  So to prevent a freak out, I decided to go to bf support today to weight him.  Well, he was 8.7 lbs there- so no worries about his weight- except to say, Pedi office PLEASE BUY A  DIGITAL SCALE.  It's not good to be off by a half a pound when we're talking about someone who only weighs 8 lbs.

So at bf group I start to feed him...and he starts to cry...then wail...then purple faced, hysterical crying...with actual tears...and a runny nose...and those heaving sighs and sniffles.  It was awful.  He continued this for 40 minutes.  I just kept walking him around the room...

I hate shots!

For those of you who have been there, how long should I expect this kind of fussiness to last?  Any experiences you can share?  Tips?

I don't have experience yet with shots.. and I'm not looking forward to it either. But, I can "weigh in" on the scale variation (sorry, terrible pun). Last week my LO was weighed at the LC's and she was 8.1lbs, and then two days later a nurse at the urgent care weighed her at 7.9lbs, which is bullcrap. It depends on the scale, and the person who is doing the measuring. If you notice that your LO is healthy, gaining weight, and thriving, I would worry too much about it.

  • The 2 month shots were the worst... DD was a crabby mess all day, but she was fine the next day. If you're comfortable with it, you might give him some baby tylenol.

DD's totally over shots now, and it's gotten better each time we go. Last time she whimpered a little and bounced right back, smiling at the nurses when we left. There's hope!

Thanks ladies!  He is asleep now (and has been since the car ride home from bf support at 1:45).  At this point, he hasn't nursed since 11:30am. When he wakes up, I'll give him some infant tylenol and try to nurse.  Poor little guy!  Good to know your LOs were back to themselves by the next day!
