XP - Traveling to Maui - check bag or buy on Island

Ok  - we are going to Maui with our 7 month old on Friday for a whole week.  What would you take and pay for baggage versus buy on island?

Diapers (She does really well in walgreens brand and I see they have several walgreens on island)

baby food - she eats two "meals" a day - one is yogurt

Sunscreen

Swimfloat (this one I already have and I can't imagine it would be better to rebuy - but maybe?)

I know the prices can be way inflated over there - but I wonder if we shop before we go to the hotel (aka walmart / kmart / walgreens which all seem to be close to the airport?)

  • I can't speak for Hawaii baby food prices although DH and I did hit one of the walmarts and a supermarket when we were over there and the stuff we bought wasn't too inflated price wise.  I'd buy diapers, wipes, babyfood and sunscreen (unless you absolutely have to have a specific brand) when you're there because of how extra you'd have to lug if you brought it all with you (think extra baggage charges!).  The swimfloat you can probably just deflate and pack in your suitcasae, probably not a huge deal, but I think it would just be easer to buy all that stuff out there.

  • I'd wait and buy on the island with the thought that you'd be saving yourself the time and pain of packing/finding room in the suitcase - which IMO is worth it.  We've gone to Maui a handful of times and I never thought things seemed unreasonably priced.  Costco is next to the airport too - they have the best price for gas on the island which is ideal for refilling the rental car on the way back.

  • We were in Maui two years ago and I only remember gas being expensive and apples being ridiculously expensive. We seriously paid like 12 for a 3 bag of apples. That said, as long as you don't shop at the resort, you should be good.
