How Many Diapers:

So I've started stock piling diapers two weeks ago, every time I go to either Walmart, Target or the grocery store I pick up a small pack of diapers. I usually get about 2packs a week. How many of should I stock pile of each size before I move on to the next? I have 250 size 1, and 100 size 2 so far.

  • From experience, I would not stock pile diapers. You never know what fit will work for your LO or what material might irritate the skin. DS leaked out of every single Huggies diaper from day one, and Pamper's left a weird teeth mark on his legs when he was about a year old. Plus, if you wait you won't over buy and waste the outgrown sizes. I would just put money into savings each week for diapers instead of actually buying them.

  • Well crud, here I thought I was doing some good planning. I've bought a variety so I can find what works and kept all the receipts. Oh well, I'll just keep the ones I have and put the money in a different saving account.

We, and some friends/family, have bought us some diapers. Each is a different brand and sizes from newbornsize 1. They bought us a small pack of most brands just so we can try them out. We have receipts taped to them so we can start with one kind, see how they work, and go from there : but they are literally the smallest packs of diapers ever lol like samples

  • I have been wondering about this. I guess I will wait until this LO gets here.
  • Yeah, you also never know when your LO will move up a size. The weight range on the pack is just a guide but you may want to go up a size early if your baby is chubby around the waist, has big thighs, etc. we started having blowouts well before we hit the weight limit in each size.

  • I slowly have learned with this pregnancy to just put whatever money you would spend on diapers on a gift card. That way you know you have the money put away for a specific reason until you know what brand works best. We plan on using Pampers NB diapers and I believe have a few boxes since I am known to have smaller babies and one jumbo pack of size one. Other than that I have about $300 on various gift cards to use when needed.

Be careful with stock piling. Some babies leak in specific brands, and some babies are allergic to some brands. I might suggest stock piling the money you would have used or buying yourself a gift card each time instead until you know that those diapers are going to work for your LO.

    I agree totally!

I did mostly cloth diapers with DS except when we went out and about.  I also used disposables overnight when he started sleeping 8+ hrs.  He gets horrible reactions from most brands of diapers and I dont even want to think about how many diapers I ended up giving away after using 1 or 2 from a pack.  I think another reason that you should maybe be stock piling gift cards is because you can save A LOT of money from buying bigger packs of diapers.  The little packs cost substantially more per diaper. I just think that you may not be happy with this down the road...

  • Be careful, I don't know about Walmart, but Target won't take any diapers back even with a receipt in September, if purchased now.  They are pretty strict on their return policy and it's way past the time frame they give. You could do a non receipt return but you only get two of those a year (two events, not two items).
  • I wouldn't recommend this. You need to figure out what brand is gonna fit best and what size you need. With my LO, I just buy the big box of diapers whenever they go on sale at walmart usually once a month. You don't really need to stockpile.and you save more money by buying the huge box once its on sale, as opposed to buying smaller bags.

  • Well the stores around where I live will take back diapers as long as they are not opened. You can exchange for a different brand or size.

Based off of experience with my last two kids - neither had any issues with any brands. I have bought Huggies, Pampers and Luvs. A couple of packs of each in size One for this baby.

If you decide to stock up I would not buy any newborn sizes - most hospitals give you a bunch to take home and most babies do not stay in them very long.  Buy a pack or two of different brands to see which one you end up liking better.

  • Wow, sounds like you're good for a while and you should only buy a couple more. My son spent about 4 days in newborn, forever in 1, and like two weeks in 2. Lol it honestly depends on the size of your baby and how your baby grows. There's not much of a way to predict if in my opinion. Also, you can exchange diapers almost anywhere, but I don't know if you can return them so just make sure you don't buy wayyyyy too many and waste your money. That being said, you'll likely use diapers for at least two years.

Sorry, I'm still working on my coffee lol hope that made some sense and didn't come off rude....
  • Honestly you are wasting a lot of money buying small packs of diapers. Like others said, put that money on a giftcard and buy the big boxes. It's sooo much cheaper per diaper.

  • I'd say you have more than enough diapers for now. I stocked up with about a months worth before DD was born. I had some Huggies and some Pampers. So far for this little one I have bought two small packs of newborn diapers and will probably buy a box or two of the size 1 diapers - in both a mix of Huggies and Pampers. Whatever we didn't use I passed onto my SIL. I have a friend who just found out she was pregnant so she will get any extras we have this time. Otherwise I don't mind donating extras to a local "diaper pantry". I don't see anything wrong with getting a small stock together, especially when I have coupons plus the diapers are on sale.

  • Also keep in mind that many moms-to-be receive diapers at their baby shower too.

  • I stock piled on diapers and everything was fine.  I just made sure to buy pampers swaddlers in sizes 1,2,3.  I bought mostly 2's and 3's.  Since those are the brand they use in the hospital I figured it was good enough for me and I never had any issues with them.  To be honest I rarely do hear of babies having trouble with Pampers swaddlers.  I don't think its a bad idea.  It worked for me.  I didn't buy diapers or wipes for more then 6 months.

Having said that I just saw how many you have! WOW I don't think you need any more 1's for sure, they grow out of that size quick. I only bought a few small packages so that I had them on hand.

We had a huge stockpile with dd1, all different brands. We didn't have any issues, with any of them. We also didn't have to buy diapers till she was 6 months! If you an dh don't have sensitive skin, you have pretty good chance that your kids won't

  • ive had friends and family members and myself start stock piling...what we do though is ask for a gift receipt for the diapers in case the baby can't use them then i can take them back and get the size or the brand what works best for the little one when he comes...but from what everyone has said on both sides they all used pampers for all kids and even us so...thats what people have been buying and they also have coupons all the time so lol...
