Our baby B is 1/2 lb smaller...

I was called on Thursday to go see the high risk doc, they checked the umbilical cord, reflexes, and hand movement of both babies. All looked okay. They have me coming in for monitoring three times a week... I'm trying not to get too worked up, but I am scared. They haven't told us a reason as to why she is smaller. I am 35 weeks today. Anyone else have a smaller twin? What was the outcome?
Are we looking at physical or developmental delays? They didn't have many answers, just said they will keep a close eye on her.

  • It's perfectly normal for one twin to be smaller.

As long as it isnt  sudden weight gain/loss that could indicate distress etc.

My baby B has been consistently larger, but since it is consistent it is just our Norm.

  • Are your twins mono/di or di/di? If the former, a growth discrepancy of 20% or more could be an indicator of TTTS. Mine were monitored super closely throughout my pregnancy for this. They might also be watching out for IUGR. Try not to worry (impossible, I know); 35 weeks is a great place to be, and since you're getting so much extra monitoring, if something were to go wrong it would get caught quickly. FWIW my boys were born at 35w4d b/c the MFM determined that their growth difference was too great (24%) and they were "safer out than in." N was a pound and a quarter lighter than L, and is still quite a bit smaller, but he has been just fine. He actually was the one to breathe room air from the start (whereas L needed oxygen at first) and has hit a couple milestones slightly before his brother (though they are both right on track developmentally). Hang in there; I hope you get some more reassurance from the doctors soon!

ETA: I see now in your siggy that you have B/G twins, so never mind about the mono/di business!

  • Those are just estimates anyway and could be off by more than a half pound. As long as both babies are growing at a sufficient rate I wouldn't worry. I have a friend IRL with di/di twins. One was a pound smaller at birth, but they were both healthy weights and they are both fine.

  • I wouldn't worry about it too much.  Both of mine were estimated at over 6 lbs each.  DS came out at 5.5 and DD came out at 4.14.  Those measurements aren't always correct.

At my last scan baby b weighed a pound less according to the estimate. He also measured 2 weeks behind my dates. That was at 34 weeks. I delivered at 37w1d and baby a weighed 6 lbs 1 oz and baby b weighed 4 lbs 12 oz. My MFM kept an eye on b to make sure he was growing. He said the difference wasn't something to worry about unless b wasn't growing.
  • DS was a full 2 pounds bigger than DD at birth. She was only 4 pounds but was perfectly healthy and required no NICU time. I was monitored very closely because of the size difference and I was worried too but it all worked out :. Now he is more than 3 pounds bigger!

  • At birth my Baby B was nearly a pound lighter than Baby A, and they were mono/di. They were both totally fine and are developing completely normally. They've hit milestones at the same time or Baby B has been first.

  • When my girls were born at 34 weeks one weighed 5.6 and the other was 4.1 with no physical or developmental delays.  As long as she is gaining weight I am sure everything will be fine. :)
  • Just to reiterate what was already said.  Especially with di/di twins, what's more important is their percentile.  Are both above 10th percentile and growing at a normal rate?  It's really not uncommon especially for fraternals to have a different weights and 1/2 lb difference doesn't sound huge at that 35 weeks.  Late pregnancy u/s especially with multiple can be off by quite a bit.  It sounds like everything else is going well and they are watching you closely.  If they are near or full term it's not likely they will have delays.  Those little guys tend to catch up really quickly.

she, baby B is in the 9th percentile and he is in the 30th. B (Eloise) was growing right along with A (Vaughn) up until our 32 or 33rd appt.

  • They found a growth discordance of 20% at 30 weeks with my b/g twins. I was put on bedrest for it, but they weren't too worried. Baby girl was 25th percentile, baby boy was 75th. At birth (36wks 1 day), he weighed 6lbs 9.4oz and she weighed 4lbs 15.7oz. They did great (except for breastfeeding)!

Exactly this.  Heck, my mo-di ID twins were a half of a pound apart at birth (5lbs 1oz and 4lbs 9oz).  For a point of reference, at my 34 week scan the MFM estimated that mine were both 5 pounds and I delivered via c-section 2 weeks later.  So those estimates can be way off.

  • My final appt with mfm at 37w they showed baby a was 65oz and baby b at 66oz. But they were born later that day and actual weights were baby a 6 10 oz and baby b was 5 12 oz. So take the estimates with a grain of salt. The further in pg you get the harder it is to accurately measure weights.

  • My baby A was born exactly 1 lb smaller than baby B. Now he's heavier and taller than his brother and doing really well :)
