One of A's first words when he looked at a pic of himself or himself in the mirror was "Zaza" which is his interpretation of Alexander. Since then, we have kind of taken to calling him Zaza a lot, and even the grandparents do it too. Do you think this summer we should try to get him to call himself Alexander? He is going to preschool in Sept, and to be honest, I feel a little silly telling the teachers to call him Zaza lol. He also repsonds to Alexander, because when I do call him that half the time.
I think it's a matter of preference. If he answers to Alexander then he obv knows his name and once he goes to school he may naturally start calling himself that. Personally, I'd let Zaza be your own special at home nickname and worry about proper names once he goes to school.
Unless you want him to go by "Za Za" forever, I would really start pushing the "Alexander." I would even go as far as having him practice introducing himself to his stuffed animals. It's going to behard for the kids to say the word "Alexander" too, so they may still use a shortened version or the same nickname, but if it's important to you, I would start to push it now.
One of my first grader's gmas told me his name was Turtle on back to school night! Ummm, no. He was called his actual name all year at school. I have a feeling he'd still be Turtle at school if I had allowed it, which might cute as a preschooler, but not so much in college! If you don't want him going by the nickname forever in public, best to limit it's use now.
Edit:
Alexander is a hard name to say, so I wouldn't be pushy about him calling himself something different. Zaza is cute, but I wouldn't reinforce it by the general public calling him that instead of it just being a cute family thing.
Are you opposed to Alex? Either way, I would start practicing having him answer the question "what's your name?" with whatever you want him to be called at school.
If he knows his name is Alexander, I think preschool will help him mature on his own to start saying Alexander if that is was the teacher calls him all the time.
Married my best friend 01/01/09
BFP#1 05/06/10. Jarebear born 12/29/10.
BFP#2 06/22/12 (DH's birthday). EDD 02/23/13. M/C and D&C 08/09/12
I call Griff "baby" so now whenever someone asks "whats your name?" he says "baby." Obviously he knows his name is Griffin and he'll respond to anyone that calls him that but when specifically asked whats your name he'll say baby. So now I'm trying to call him "Griff" more often, which sucks cause I like calling him "baby" but I don't want him to be confused when it comes to school time. So if I were in your position, I'd start calling him Alexander.
I would keep the nickname for home, but intro him at school as Alexander.
Currently DS is calling himself Anthony Spencer. His teacher asked MH if he had a different last name as us b/c he told them that was his name. Spencer is one of the trains on Thomas. Clearly we need to practice our actual last name with him!

This sounds similar to when you ask Alexander where he lives, and he replies "The Island of Sodor."

I also think Zaza is cute and wouldn't push it too much when it comes to him saying his full name. It is a tough one. My BF son is Alexander and C calls him "Aggie Tanner" but she can say Alex and is finally starting to put the two together to make it sound right. Maybe start with Alex or just asking him what his name is often and say it the right way. He'll catch on eventually. He certainly won't want to go to High School being called Zaza lol
