Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Baby waking up too early

My 7.5 month old is waking up way too early! She is up ready to play at 5:30 every single morning. My husband and I have been waiting until 6 to get her, but she doesn't seem to be getting the picture. We cut out her late nap a couple of days ago, but that hasn't solved the problem. She eats dinner around 6:30 or 7 and has a bottle when she goes to bed around 7:30. This past night she even woke up at 3:00 and my husband fed her a bottle (not my idea) after rocking her for 20 minutes to get her to go back to sleep and she was still up at the same time 2 hours later!!!! We need to sleep.....

  • We're having the same thing happen to us. LO goes to bed between 7:30 and 8 every night and is awake between 5 and 6am. She use to STTN, but she doesn't now that she's in her crib. And the only way to get her back to sleep is with a bottle. I hate doing it, but she gets so worked up there is no calming her back down. I've tried for hours at a time and it doesn't work. We've tried an earlier bedtime and a later bedtime, but it has no affect on what time she wakes up. I'm just guessing she's going to be an early riser for now. You may want to change her bedtime and see if that works for you. You may have better luck than we did.

I'm interested to see what others have to say about this.

  • Do you think she really needs that 3am bottle? It is not usually necessary for babies this old to need a MOTN feeding unless it's a growth spurt. I would suggest sleep training to work on her self-soothing abilities. If you respond to her at 3am then of course she will expect you to come back when she stirs again at 5:30. Consistency is the key to instilling good sleep habits and teaching them to put themselves back to sleep.

Even if she stops taking the MOTN bottle I can't promise she will sleep later, but at least you will be more rested from getting uninterrupted sleep. My son sleeps from 6-5:30 most nights and I would love for him to sleep later, but the fact that he STTN makes it easier to cope with.

  • DD used to sleep 8pm-9am every night. Once the time changed and it started getting lighter earlier she is now waking up between 6:30-7am. She is still tired and normally naps not too long after waking up.

I bought room darkening blinds to put up. I am hoping this will keep it dark enough that she begins to sleep a little longer again.

  • Both of my kids did this, too.  I think it's normal, unfortunately.  DS decided that 7:30 is a better time to wake up once he got a bit older.  But DD is only 7 months and many times I find myself up with a silly, happy little girl at 5:30.  She eats and goes right back to bed usually.  But still, she is up and wants to play at that time, too.  Some kids are just early risers.

  • The time change definitely messed w/ her sleep. She's up an hr earlier.  We've talked about getting room darkening shades for her room but haven't yet.  I just go to bed earlier.
