Way TMI...

Happy Saturday ladies!! This is entirely TMI but I really want to know if any of you have experienced what I have going on.

In the past few days I noticed a large "lump" on my right labia majora. It started off small and not painful and has developed into a big, painful lump. I thought it was just an ingrown hair, but it is much bigger and way more painful than any ingrown hair I have ever experienced. My entire right labia is swollen and the top of my pelvis feels bruised. I have done some research and think it is a sebaceous cyst, which can be caused by increased hormones and clogged pores.

If it doesn't start going down or the pain doesn't decrease by Monday I will be calling my clinic since my first appointment isn't until the 9th (I can't wait that long to get this thing taken care of!) But until then, I'm wondering if any of you have ever experienced this, either during pregnancy or not.

Sorry for the gross details, but DH is out of town so I can't bug him about it Smile

Re: Way TMI...

  • I have no experience with this but it sounds painful and uncomfortable. I hope you feel better soon!

  • I once found a lump in my breast. It started out sort of small and within days grew to the size of a golf ball. The doctor told me that since it grew so quickly, it was not cancer. It turned out to be a complex cyst, which is just a more dense form of a cyst. They drained it with a needle, and the liquid that came out was yellow and green mixed with a little blood. It sounds like your lump grew in a short amount of time, so it could definitely be a cyst. Best to get it checked out though. FX that it's nothing!!
  • I had a huge one with my 2nd pregnancy. It was PAINFUL. I had to have mine drained, that was PAINFUL. All they could do was freeze the area because I was pregnant. And then because it was a huge mass that needed to be drained, they had to pack the cavity. I had to go to an extramural nurse everyother day to have the packing changed. That was a ***, so painful. It took a good 2 to 3 months before I didn't need the wound to be packed anymore.

My body hates hormones and it decided to punish me when there's a change in them. I don't wish cysts on anyone. Good luck!

ETA: Mine was on my upper inner thigh.

  • I'm not sure if I had exactly the same thing, but I did get a lump "down there" a little ovet a wrek ago that I had experienced once before, about a year ago. Then, and this time, it was likely a small cyst though I did not go to the doc for it and both times it burst on its own sorry, also TMI... and was healed a day or so later. Though I did not go to my doc for it, I asked about it and they agreed it was likely cyst that happens normally as it went away on its own. HTH!

  • I get sebaceous cysts when I get my period. The doctor can prescribe you and antibiotic ointment or cream. It will come to a head eventually and will pop. At least, mine do. Sometimes you have to go get the doctor to lance it. It is painful and annoying.

This thing is super painful. I can't even walk or sit without wanting to cry. I have been laying on my back pretty much all day because even laying on my side hurts it. I seriously considered going to the urgent care by my house this morning but got nervous since they are not my OB and I would hate for them to do anything he wouldn't recommend.

I'm guessing yours are related to hormones then? This thing has been hanging around for a few days and there is no head in sight.

Ya, I couldn't move with mine. I couldn't wear pants and putting on panties were a B. Not to mention sitting to use the washroom made me cry. I was used to getting small ones on my period, so I was waiting it out. It didn't go down at all. Our ER usually has a 4 TO 6 hour wait. They rushed me in, as soon as they saw how distressed I was.

I would get it looked at asap.

    Edited: bumping from phone.

  • Try putting a really warm compress on the area a couple times a day. This has worked for me before but never had a really big one
  • I did in my first pregnancy and I freaked out. The doctor said it was a varicose vein and it would go away after the pregnancy, which it did.

I was warned that once they get really big to NOT try and lance/drain them yourself. Huge risk of infection.

  • Thanks ladies. It hurts so bad when I wipe after peeing that I have considered doing the drip dry to avoid even touching it. The urgent care here in town already closed and is closed on Sunday (along with everything else) so I'm going to try to make it until Monday. I don't know if this warrants an ER visit, but if it keeps hurting this much I might give in.

  • Oh my gosh I have one too that just showed up yesterday and is very painful. I would recommend Epsom salt baths and warm compresses.
  • Thanks again everyone. I feel much better and slightly less embarassed about it now that I know it's not just me haha.

  • I had something like this with my pregnancy with DS and I do get them from time to time when I start my period but they were never as bad as when I was pregnant. Mine was right on the line in between my thigh and my crotch and it was on my left side. I ended up having to have it drained and packed and it was the most miserable experience, but it took care of it and it healed just fine. I still have a little scar and can see where it was, but I HAD to have it drained b/c it wasn't going away and it hurt SO BAD. I actually had my procedure done at my urgent care and they knew I was pregnant and I felt like they took any precautions necessary.

  • With my DD i developed a para-urethral cyst it was horrible... I had to wait it out and go in post-baby and have it surgical removed since it was attached to the urethra and the urologist didn't want me end up with a catheter for the rest of my life... But anyways yours sounds like a bartholin cyst... I wouldn't recommend looking up images online...

  • If you feel like you need to see someone, you might try calling your OB's office and see if they have any specific urgent care facility or doctor they recommend when it's not office hours. So sorry you're dealing with this!
I promise to never forget that this little dude deserves just as much love after the baby comes as he has now.

I read about the Bartholin Cysts as well and I don't think this is one of those. My bump is at the top of the labia majora, not low or anywhere near the Bartholin ducts.

Also...I should have listened to you and not looked up images online. Bad idea.

I had a horrible one years ago and ended up in the ER. Epsom salt baths and a warm compress is what they told me to do.
  • I've never had one and from the sounds of it I don't want one! I'm so sorry your having to deal with this, my neighbors daughter started getting something that sounds similar to this when she hit puberty- the poor thing it was horrible because she was in so much pain. They did alot of warm compresses I remember and put her on antibiotics.

This might sound strange but if you have any Apple Cider Vinegar, preferably the kind like Braggs with the "mother" in it (unfiltered). You might be able to do a warm sitz type bath. ACV is an amazing remedy for damn near anything and everything ( I always sound like the windex thing from Big Fat Greek Wedding) but it really does pretty much fix anything and may provide you SOME relief. Hope you get it sorted soon and get reflief ASAP.

A little but not really bad. I more noticed it when I wiped "down there". There was slight discomfort with it.

  • I agree with PP about the warm compress. That has worked for me in the past one small ones I've had during periods. Good luck!
  • If it is that painful I would just go to the ER. That way you can make sure you don't have an abscess or something that could turn into a bigger problem, and get some relief. Good luck :(
