Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

question about progesterone supplementation

I have an unusual situation in that I have 2 OB's. One is 2 hrs away, and I've gone to him for years; I was infertile all those years, and didn't mind driving for an annual appointment. Well, when I became pregnant last April, I decided to get a local doctor. I miscarried. I got pregnant again in July, found out my progesterone was low, asked local dr for supplement, and found out that no one in my area is willing to prescribe it. So I went back to Dr. in St. Louis, he put me on Crinone 8%, and I miscarried anyway (blighted ovum). So when I realized April 1st that I was pregnant, I still had Crinone and refills, so started using it immediately. Then my husband said let's go to the local Dr, let's just see what happens this time. I haven't even seen the local dr yet, so she doesn't know I'm using the Crinone. I've had several lab appts for HCG, which has all been normal, and 2 ultrasounds now. One at 6 weeks, no sign of a baby, and 1 Thursday which measured 7w2d and no sign of a baby. So they are saying blighted ovum again and of course suggested a D&C. I read the misdiagnosedmiscarriage site...I know it's a long shot, but if there's even a chance, I don't want a D&C yet. Maybe after 9 or so weeks if there is still nothing there. But this site says 7 weeks is too early to give up (I have given up, but I still want to wait, meaning, I'm not in denial, I probably will miscarry, but if there's even a slight chance of a mistake, I'm not ready for a D&C yet). HERE IS MY QUESTION!  Local Dr. said if I don't miscarry in a month, they'll do another ultrasound, and then would recommend a D&C. I'd be 11 weeks, and if nothing was there, yes, I'd do a D&C. Is me using Crinone keeping my body from miscarrying though?  I don't want to stop it just in case, but will I never miscarry as long as I'm using it?

Re: question about progesterone supplementation

  • I don't have any experience with the shots your on so I can't help you there. But I did want to convey to you that I am so sorry for your losses its never an easy thing. I can also understand wanting to wait it out a little longer. Maybe your just not as far along as you or they believe. You never know. And its better to wait it out the constantly wonder about the "what ifs" I hope it just turns out to be that you are earlier and you go on to have a happy healthy pregnancy. ::HUGS:: and lots of T and P for you.

I hope you'll let us know what happens and that one of the other ladies here can help you with your question.

  • I can "kind of" relate. I had a missed MC at 9 weeks. At my 5 week appointment my progestorone level was low 12. The doctor put me on oral progesterone of 200mg x1/day. I had an US at 8 weeks and showed the baby was only 6weeks. Did another US at 9 weeks and there was no growth. I never spotted or had cramps. It wasn't till after I stopped the progesterone supplements that I started to miscarry. So, I think the progesterone delayed my miscarriage.
  • I'm sorry I don't know anything about the drug....but if your heart is telling u to wait and u feel like u can wait..u know emotionally I would I guess cauwe like u saie even if there is a chance u don't want to be what if

  • Yes progesterone will stop you from having the miscarriage. Prigesterone is the hormone that your body produces to sustain pregnancy / pregnancy symptoms throughout most of the first trimester. If you are taking supplements then your body will be tricked into thinking that baby is still there and growing.
  • Progesterone bsupplements early on can help prevent until 12 weeks or so when placenta takes over with progesterone. However, it can from what I understand also delay an inevitable one...so like in my case something with chromosomes probably went wrong when first forming. I was in crinone. Mc at almost 10 weeks but may have sooner at like 5 or 6 if not for crinone. I would use crinone again for sure because bit can't hurt but I will always have that in my head. My RE just gives it to everyone first trimester regardless of progesterone levels as a precaution.
