1st Trimester

out with friends

Hi everyone!  I'm only 5 weeks so I haven't told anyone yet, however DH and I are going to a banquet tonight where all of our friends will be.  This banquet has been known in the past to be a big drinking event so I'm worried I'll throw up all kinds of red flags when I stick to water!!  We want to keep it quiet for a bit longer so just wondering how you all kept it a secret when you were with friends at an event like this? Thanks!!

Re: out with friends

  • I used the "'Im on antibiotics for a UTI and can't drink" excuse.  They will not want to hear about a urinary tract infection and will not ask anymore!  Congratulations!

  • Its not hard. Just tell them you are on antibiotics for a condition and can't drink with them. Folks don't give a crap as much as you think they do.

  • I went to a wedding last night and drank sparkling water with lime and most people didn't even notice and the couple friends that heard me order just kind of made fun of me and I answered back with a sarcastic "you know me, always living on the edge" and they laughed and didn't question it.

When people are having fun and drinking, as long as you look like you're having a good time, they don't even notice.
  • I just went through this and drank virgin margaritas all night. I talked to the bartender ahead of everyone getting there and told them so they knew. You only have to make sure people don't buy you drinks.

  • I know just how you feel. I've been concerned with the same question, "Why aren't you drinking? Are you pregnant?". Geez, why can't ppl just make it easy on us? lol Well, here's my test. I usually drink wine, but now that I'm pregnant and a nonalcoholic drink will be my best friend I say ask the bartender secretly to give you a cranberry juice with some lime. That way if anyone asks what you are drinking tell them I'm having a "Cape Coder" which is cranberry juice with vodka. That should throw them off. If they ask for a sip tell them you have a cold sore and don't wanna share. I'm sure that'll work...lol Good Luck

  • I would order a virgin something like seltzer with lime, margarita etc. That way the majority of people won't even notice. The rest you can tell that you have to drive.

  • I just had to deal with this last night! I went to a brewfest, so of course if you aren't drinking you stand out, and seeing as how I'm not ready to tell the world I'm pregnant, this is what I did. I offered to drive, so I was DD, but once in a while I'd hold my husband's beer so people thought I was sipping on it. One girl mentioned to me that "it's funny how I've only been out with you when you were pregnant, and now that you aren't, you're not drinking!" i just said, "oh I had a drink before we came but I don't want to have anymore since I'm driving..." You probably don't have to put on such an act, but if the DD thing doesn't fly, you could try just buying a drink and have your husband drink it when people aren't looking.

  • Or the virgin drink thing- that's a great idea, too!

  • We recently went over to our buddies house, my husband and I are big beer drinkers we only buy hard to find beers etc. So when I wasn't drinking the 'new' beer we discovered-it honestly didn't phase our friends and I was so worried it would the whole way there. I didn't have to say anything, some people just understand that maybe you are not in the mood to drink at the moment.

  • Just carry around a glass. People think they are OMG sticking out but truthfully, you're not the center of anyone else's world. They won't be paying that much attention to whether you're drinking or not.

  • I just dealt with this on Friday night at our friends 40th birthday.  I ordered club soda with lime and when someone tried to get me a drink i said "i've already had two so im pacing myself"  then around our family saturday night i said i had a bladder infection and was on anti-biotics.
