tortocollis?

Sp? Sorry if I totally butchered that. During our last pedi appt, our doc said that DS had very minor tortocollis meaning that his neck is tight and he tends to tilt it at an angle. She said it's probably from his position in the womb (especially since DD was sitting on his head the entire time haha) and gave us some stretches to do.

He used to not want to turn his head to the left, and so we put a bunch of toys to his left and started feeding him alternating each side so he wasn't always looking at us from his right. Well now he's favoring his right side! Poor thing - his neck seems so tight that he won't even look or let me stretch to his right. What do I do? Maybe a little neck massage with some baby oil to loosen the muscles? I'm  just afraid that at our next appt the pedi will tell me it's progressing....anyone have this issue as well?

Re: tortocollis?

  • WE HAD THE SAME THING!!!! Stretches work it took a few weeks to really notice. We also took DD to a chiropractor 2x per week make sure they have experience w babies. She just had her last adjustment two days ago. It took 2 months to fully correct it she was diagnosed 2 mos. I was in tears when I learned about it and googled all the worst case scenarios but she is perfectly fine now. No worries!!!!!

My DD had/has the same thing but it's so much better now.  We actually went to a physical therapist twice and she just massaged the neck but what I think really helped was just working on it at home.  LOTS of tummy time is what I think has made the biggest difference and just encouraging her to look both ways throughout the day.  GL to you!

  • I would definitely explore a pediatric physical therapist. They can do a thorough evaluation, work with your little one and make sure you are doing the exercises right (as well as the right exercises). Our DD had tort and we didn't have to take her very long to PT. but she did have to wear a helmet. Does your LO have a flat spot, too?

  • DS had this as well. We went to a pediatric physical therapist for it. He favored his left side. We were given some exercises and did most of them at home because he didn't care for the physical therapist.

Some things we did was to take a toy and move it to the right (side he didn't like) and back to the center. 3 sets of 10. Another was to hold him like he was superman I guess on our arm in front of a mirror. Made it so he had to turn right to look at himself.  Another was to stretch his neck to the right. Another was to have him do tummy time, making sure to place his arms under his are tight against his body, or on his boppy. The older they get and the better head control, it helps work itself out. There were a few others as well.

  • My best friend's son had this. At his 2 month check up they told her more tummy time. At his 4 month check up they sent him to rehab for physical therapy once a week and had to do the stretches 3 times a day at home. He is 5 months now and it has improved a lot. Stick with the stretches and alternating sides. Maybe do some stretches when you give him a warm bath.
