Babies: 3 - 6 Months

spitting up

DS is 5 months old (4 adjusted) and spits up a lot.  It's kind of driving me crazy. Constant outfit changes (for both of us) despite the use of bibs and burp rags. Plus the feeling that he just isn't eating what he should. It doesn't bother him and he is gaining weight okay. I think they call that a "happy spitter".  However it bugs me because I think he could be gaining more weight.. and just the whole unpleasantness of it all.  Anyone else in this boat?

thanks for any input or thoughts. I am wondering if a different formula would be better. He hasn't always been a big spitter but it's been going on for quite some time.

Re: spitting up

  • We have this.  No advice on formula since she's EBF.  But as for outfits, we only change if she's really soaked.  Otherwise, we just wipe her off.  We have 3 sizes of things to wipe with and about 15 of each so we never run out.  We had literally never done tummy time without spit up until a week ago.  We'd just pick her up, wipe off her hands and face, and move her over a little bit on the blanket.  Some days I'd change her about 3 times and after that, I'd just hand her off, much like I probably would if she had colic or something--there's only so much of anything you can take before you need a break.  Finally, if it's just me, I just undress her, we get in the tub, and I let her swim around with her legs which is fun for both of us and tires her out.  At least it's a break from wet outfits...

  • We are going through the same thing here. Freaked me out at first so I called my pedi who said its a phase they go through and it's perfectly normal. They asked which formula I am feeding and they told me it was fine as long as she acts normal and is happy and gaining weight. Which she is! I'm just waiting for it to pass! Hopefully it does soon cause I'm like you, I hate all the outfit changes which means more laundry for mama to do! GL!

  • Yep...DD spits up all the time.  Sometimes 2-3 hours after eating! And then it looks like cottage cheese and it stinks bad! I think all of my shirts have spit up on the right shoulder. She always ors a wet burp with spit up when I pick her up.
  • Leo starting spitting up a lot at about 5 weeks. He's a happy spitter as well and was gaining weight fine, but the spit up was excessive. Like really excessive and he was constantly starving. Like wanting a full bottle of formula every 1.5 hours. Our pedi checked him out and just diagnosed it as reflux. She had us switch to A.R. formula and it really helped. He is spitting up less, although still a lot. Our laundry pile is still ridiculous, but what really made the difference is that he is holding down more of his bottle so he isn't constantly starving and is happier all around. Maybe you can ask your pedi about it??
