supplementing with formula

So, we've been BFing our son but have noticed that he's had some tough nights despite being fed, changed and cuddled by myself or DH.  One of my DH's co-workers suggested we supplement with formula in the evening so that he could sleep through the night.   Apparently she BFd her children but turned to supplementing with formula to make the nights easier.  I'm worried that starting this might affect our son.  Anyone out there BFing and supplementing with formula?  If so, were there any side effects? TIA!

  • I supplement, but have given her BM and formula (one or the other, not both) before bed time and have not noticed a difference between the amount of sleep she gets. LO is 7 weeks and will sleep from 12-6ish. I do pump and try to feed her 4oz of formula or
