If you feel like he's ready then start. My DS is 2.5 years old and I don't think he is ready yet. He will go potty sometimes if I bribe him, but otherwise he isn't interested. Hopefully this summer we will start.
If you think your LO is ready, maybe just start with getting a potting and putting it on it at certain times during the day. Just test it out and see what happens.
that seems early to me, but we just potty trained DD when she turned 3. I'm glad that we waited. I feel like she understands it a bit more, can express more when she needs to go, and can get more excited about underwear and treats/rewards. I say give it a try, but don't push it.
Being a preemie shouldn't make a difference. Don't potty train because 'you' think it's time, wait for your son to tell you. My daughter potty trained at 19 months, but she was ready. She stayed dry for hour and told us before she pooped. We decided to try the 3-day method and she caught on by day two.
If you want to try I say go for it, just be prepared to stop if he doesn't catch on after a few days.
What is the 3 day method? I think he may be ready he has gone about 5 times on the potty but stopped because he seems un interested.. He know tells me when he is pooping and is very intrested in the potty
I just did the 3 day potty training method on babycenter with my 32 month old. It really helped us. I liked having a plan for how to start and my son loved running around half naked.
I would try it. And after 3 days you can decide to continue or try again later.
I always heard and was true for us... that 3 is the magic number for boys. We tried at 2.5 and it was obvious he wasn't ready. When we tried again at 3, it was 4 days and he was done.
My one piece of advice is stick to a week of diligently trying and then re-evaluate.
We trained DD at 22 months. She was the opposite of yours, she told us when she went pee but not poop. We went cold turkey (except at night and naps) and she peed all over our house for like 3 days, and then something clicked and she's hardly every had an accident since. We literally didn't leave the house for several days, though. It was pretty easy to teach her to pee in the potty, but poop was harder (maybe because she never noticed before?).
DD1 trained at 3. I did nothing. One day, she was done with diapers, one pee accident and she was fine.
DD2 is training herself now (she's 2 years, 2 months). I'm doing nothing. Kids train when they're ready.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind."
- Kurt Vonnegut
We are starting with DD in a couple weeks. She is interested in the toilet, stays dry for several hours at a time, and is starting to hate diapers. We feel she is ready for these reasons. She is about 25 month.
I think we could have potty trained around 2 because my son was using the potty pretty often, but we were having a new baby soon and I didn't want to deal with regression after she was born.
He was almost 2 1/2 when out of nowhere one day he told me he wanted to start wearing underwear. We put him in underwear that weekend and it only took one day for him to train. He was also night trained almost immediately. It was definitely worth it to wait until he was ready.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

We trained both of our kids right after they turned 2. Neither one of them showed any interest but my DD did tell me when she pooped. We did the 3 day method but it took both of them more like 3 weeks to be fully trusted. From *my* experience I disagree that children need to be "ready". Once you take their diapers off, they start learning the feelings of needing to go and the mess it makes if they don't get to the bathroom... and rewards for any achievements of course
