Toddlers: 24 Months+

eating...24 months and won't chew

DS will be 2 soon and won't chew! i have to mash up his food for him or else he'll just spit it out or gag. he eats VERY healthy and isn't picky (thank god) i still use my baby bullet for dinners.

he'll hold a granola bar and lick the chocolate off or a chip and lick the salt off but mostly just licks stuff or sucks it until it dissolves.

i've worked with an OT but wasn't very helpful and she kind of gave up on us. i'm going to the Dr soon to get a referral to a pediatrician to then see who else we can talk to. possibly a speech therapist or something.

anyone else going through this?

any research i've done says to just keep trying and offer chunks but i can't force him to chew or to eat something he just spits out.

any other ideas?

Thanks ladies!

Re: eating...24 months and won't chew

  • My picky eater recently went on a hunger strike. I'm thinking this is just another ridiculous phase these kids put us through to drive us nuts. My daughter won't eat a granola bar or most chips. They are trying to get control over us and it works. Only the past few days has my daughter been eating things other than Cheerios and goldfish, we went through this almost 6 weeks. It's not easy to just sit tight and keep offering them things, because frankly it's a waste of food and it just gets us upset. I wish you luck.

  • I think you are right to seek a referral for a different OT.  Did you work with Early Intervention the first time?  They are free and parent referred.  Good luck!

  • I am a special education teacher....I would rec. calling The Dept of  Health  and getting your child evaluated..it is free and wonderful (my son received speech through EI and it changed his life) Tell them you have an oral motor concern and explain the eating...they will send the correct people to help...Good luck =)

  • I agree with calling EI. An OT should have been able to help you out without giving up on you. Sounds like you need to find a better one!
