August 2012 Moms

What does A2012 think?

I'm reading the paper today and there is a tiny story about a school from MN. They went on a field trip to a museum in SD about and hour away from the school. One of the students a 4 year old boy was left behind at the museum and they didn't realize it until they got back to the school. Field trip protocol says that you are suppose to count kids before and after they get on the bus.  They are now having a meeting to decide if the teachers should get a slap on the wrist or if they should be fired.

What do you ladies think?

  • Fired. No excuse for leaving a child especially that young. If I was the parent I would go bsc on someone.

  • Ugh is there a middle ground of sanctions? Leave without pay through the end of the year? Something should happen but I'm sure the teachers feel terrible about it. I'm not sure they deserve to lose their jobs.

  • Fired.

If you can't count, you probably shouldn't be responsible for teaching others how to.

  • Fired. No excuse. Something serious could have happened. If you can't deal with the chaos of a lot children, don't make it your job. I can't imagine the parents would ever trust their children with that teacher again, so I see no option but to fire her.
  • Fired!!!! I live in MN, I can't believe I haven't heard about this on the news! I used to be a preschool teacher and couldn't imagine 1. going on a field trip 4 hrs away (they must be out in the boons for SD to be 4 hrs away) and 2. Not making sure abs

  • I think they should be fired. They are dealing with kids there is no room for a mistake like that. If that would have been Landen I would have been PISSED. I am sure the kid was in good hands, but I mean seriously.

  • Holy cow. Absolutely fired. I would make the world's biggest stink about it until she was gone, that is far beyond unacceptable and negligent.

  • It's unfortunate, but I agree with the fired side. At a preschool it's a "fireable" offense to even leave a kid on the playground.

  • Fired, and if the school tries to bury it quietly with a slap on the wrist the parents should bring it to huge media attention.

Leaving a four year old an hour away is 100% a fireable offense IMO and there is no other way to handle it period.&nbs

    Fired, without a doubt.

  • Fired. Absolutely without a doubt. The safety and well-being of a child takes priority in and out of the classroom. If you can't handle that task then maybe you're better off babysitting a goldfish.

  • I would have blown up on someone if that was my preschooler left behind.
As a former teacher and mom I don't know how I would expect parents to trust me again. I'd be expecting to be fired.

  • Fired! I hate that someone would loose their job over this but it is inexcusable.  You trust in these teachers that they will care for your child.  This is the ultimate break in trust.

  • How can you do that!?!?

I always counts my kids twice before we leave school and twice before we come back.  No excuse!

  • if a headcount was done, and a mistake was made, it would still be a huge deal, but I would be able to see that it was not intentional.  Failure to do a headcount would be considered negligent, and I would sue.  (Hubs is a lawyer).

  • I think 4 is a little young to be going on a field trip an hour away. What about chaperones, Where were they? Were there enough? seems like a lot of people dropped the ball on this one.
