Old School Rocker

I know that nowadays, most people buy gliders over rockers, or use recliners instead, and even though I love love the Monte Vole wing glider that costs $1000, I am discovering that at my core, I am a frugal momma and would rather spend that much money elsewhere. So I found a really fantastic old school farm porch rocker and will be picking it up this weekend. My plan is to make it comfy with a big square seat pillow and something for my back as well. My nursery is tiny, like 6 x 7 ft tiny, which is what has fueled my decision to get a rocker instead.

Question is, who has used one of these, and do you find them comfortable? I don't want to regret my savvy find in the middle of a late night feeding.

Re: Old School Rocker

  • I was given an old school rocker by my mil. I love it, I love the history and the fact that my husband was also rocked and nursed in the same rocker as my children. I found a square pillow that fit pretty perfectly from Ross or marshals. And I have a throw blanket over the back that adds some cushion and warmth. I found a back cushion to be less comfortable for my style of chair.

I have been happy with my choice. The chair is comfortable but bare bones compared to my friend's plush glider and recliner.

  • I am using the rocker from my nursery! I ordered cushions online to match the nursery and they aren't the most comfortable. I don't regret not having a glider. We didn't have the room and I love the history but wish it was a bit softer. But that's the cushions fault and not the rocker!

  • We got DH's grandma's old wood rocker from when his dad was a baby.  It was beautiful but it was narrow.  It was hard to have room to nurse in, my Mybreastfriend pillow didn't fit.  Then when DS got a little bigger it was a little uncomfortable to rock him in.

I'm doing the same thing! My dad gave my mom a rocking chair when I was born, which my mom has now given to me.  I just can't justify spending so much money a glider that I'm only going to use for a few months.  I did think about possibly getting an upholstered gliding footstool to go with it.

  • I have my great grandmothers rocker for the nursery. It's surprisingly comfortable, but baby won't be here til August, so it's not truly tested yet. I figure if it turns out not to work with baby, I can get a glider then. At least this way I tried the nostalgic, frugal approach. I wouldn't feel right running out to buy a glider when I already have an option which may work out.

  • we are using an old school, traditional rocker that we spray painted white to match our nursery furniture. my mom made a cushion for it to match the cornice board fabric. I did end up getting a Medela Nursing Stool b/c it was high off the ground - really helped my back when rocking/nursing. I love it!

  • We have an old school rocker that's been in the family for a while. I bought new pads, but it still wasn't comfortable for nursing. I found myself always sitting up in my bed nursing, which wasn't super comfortable either. At 4 months we went and bought a LazyBoy recliner for the nursery. We'll eventually put it in our living room.
