Umbilical cord in the way

At my anatomy ultrasound at 19 weeks, the tech guessed boy but she was only 70% sure. And by the time DH and I were able to look at the monitor (at the very end) baby wasn't in a good position. So I didn't feel very confident about the gender determination.

Then at my OB appointment today, my doctor was kind enough to do a quick ultrasound to see if she was right about it being a boy. I thought I saw a penis, but my doctor said it was actually the umbilical cord, which was going right through baby's legs completely blocking his or her privates. Even though baby was moving a lot, the cord stayed put. All my doc could say was there was no indication of it being a boy, but he couldn't make a guess either way.

So now I'm wondering if the ultrasound tech saw the cord and not a penis. Anyone else had the cord blocking baby's genitals? And if you ended up getting a follow up ultrasound later, was the cord still in the way or did it move?

Re: Umbilical cord in the way

  • At the beginning of our first ultrasound which we did early our little guy had the cord right between his legs. However the machine was able to detect the difference so she knew it was there and when it moved so she didnt mistake the two. It was confirmed

  • I have two boys and in my u/s there was a clear difference. With this one, I saw the cord in between her legs and said that's not a penis because it looked different than my boy u/ss.

  • I know it can be frustrating, but I would wait until you can clearly tell the gender.  My first baby was a girl.  She would only show her butt and feet to the u/s tech.  This went on until I was around 24 weeks.  Turned out the Tech's
  • At 17w we did an u/s as a part of our genetic testing and baby did the same thing with the umbilical cord. Next week we have another u/s and if baby doesn't cooperate we will still be able to determine sex by blood test.
