Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Doc ordered head MRI for DS...

-->

So we went for their 12 mo check up today and here are their stats:

DD

29 " long 45%

20.5lbs   39%

45cm head 47%

DS

24.9lbs 78%

31" long 84%

49cm head 98%. His head has been increasing. When I was pregnant, we knew his head was 80-90th percentile, but they were born at 36 weeks, so it took them  a little while to get on the full term chart (he was there by month 2). At 9months, his head was 90th percentile, now it's 98th. The pedi showed me the growth curve and his head measurement is increasing at every well child visit. She encouraged the head MRI within 2 weeks.

Has anyone else gone through this? Our pedi said to not be worried but, "she wouldn't be doing her job if she didn't order the MRI with his growth curve."

Re: Doc ordered head MRI for DS...

  • To warn you, they're likely going to knock him out for the test.  My nephew was a bit older when he had his MRI.  It turned out that he just has a big head.  He finally grew into it ten years later.

  • This scares me! DS just had his 12 month check yesterday. His measurements were exactly the same as your DS's (actually his head was like 49.4 or so) but the doc didn't seemed concerned at all!
  • We had the MRI done when he was 11 months old, it was scary yes and it only revealed that he has a big head, unless you have a gut feeling that something may be wrong i would think twice about the test

  • Yes, DS has always had a big head.... at his 9 mo apt his head had jumped a percentile. They said they were going to do an MRI if it continued at the follow up apt in 2 months time, but it stuck in the 98th percentile and just started to even out now. It
  • I'm sorry you have to go through this.  If you go through with the MRI, they will sedate him. Since it's a short procedure, they'll just put him under general anesthesia using a little laughing gas and he'll be knocked out before you know it. &nbs

  • My DD has a large head and our Pedi seemed a little concerned at her 15 mo appointment, but did not order any testing.  I am a little worried that maybe he should have since he told us that her soft spot was still there so her head was going to conti
