Unisex names

Would you consider a unisex name for your child?  Our first DD is named Adelle Margaret...very feminine.

For this baby, we have Declan James picked out for a boy.  We are seriously considering the name Emerson Kay for a girl.  It has family value for us and we both really like the name.  We've also considered the name Rosalind.  No other names are on the table as of now.

I know TB traditionally has a problem with Emerson for a girl, and one traditional meaning is "son of Emery"...but it feels more feminine to me.  We would call her Emma or Emmy.

Re: Unisex names

  • We have very simple naming rules for our kids:

    - spelled correctly

    - distinctly masculine or feminine depending on the sex of the child

    - not in the Top 10

Emerson fails #2.  As such, it'd never be a contender

  • FWIW, the one Emerson I know is a girl,  so I automatically think girl. Other than that, I'm a big believer in naming your child whatever you want, especially when you say it's got special meaning to you. BIL and SIL gave nephew her maiden name for h

  • When considering names, I try to think about how a name will present itself on a resume.

My business sense usually wins out when looking at names for children.

That's why I usually go with traditional names and traditional spellin

  • I'm not into unisex names, but that's just my style and preference. You really need to go with what you and YH like and agree on. This is your child, to me, it doesn't matter what other people think. I am more traditional, and I don't like funny

  • I actually know a little girl named Emerson. I think it's a lovely girls name and calling her Emmy would be super adorable. We are not considering unisex names. If it's a girl we're naming her Audrey and if it's a boy he'll be a Jr. but we'll call him by

  • I would just name her Emma or Emmy to begin with. It would still have the family meaning it's just a shorter version and she wouldn't have to worry about gender confusion at roll call... But thats me. This is your baby to name as you please. Just keep her

  • Typically they're no big deal to me, but I really, really dislike the trend of naming girls "son of" names or masculine sounding surnames for first names. They're not unisex.

What about Emeline, Emilia or Eleanor if you want an Emmie or Ellie

  • I love the name Emerson!  I actually think of it as being more appropriate for a girl than a boy.

I live in the south and we have all sorts of crazy family names that are used, maybe I'm more used to the more unique unisex names.
