My DH and I are aiming to start TTC soon. When is the best time to toss the pill? I read about 3 months before to get on track with your cycle, but I thought I would ask what worked best for any other moms out there.
My doc said to toss the pill when your ready then use condoms for a month or 2 - she said it's good to wait a little after you get off the pill but you don't have to. I got off the pill in January and my cycle regulated right away. My cycle was exactly the same amount of days since then. But yes, don't go off the pill unless you are 100%.
Stopped the pill in August, charted to avoid until December (used condoms as well while I was figuring out my cycle) and got pregnant the following July.
I have researched the heck out of this topic. We are tossing the pill at the end of this year and are going to just use the natural cyclebeads method. I believe this will work well for us because I am still in my early 20s and before starting the pill I had extremely regular cycles. No infertility or irregularity in my family as far as I know. Our reason for choosing the cycle method is that I want to reduce my chances of having twins (they already run in my family), I want to have some time to make sure my cycle returns to normal and there are no problem I need to get checked, and we are perfectly fine with getting pregnant but will likely wait a bit longer before actively trying during peak ovulation. It also gives time for your body to regulate it's own hormones. I am already on a women's multi-vitamin and have been for years. It is nothing really special, just a multi-vitamin with folic acid just in case we got preggers on accident. Better safe than sorry!
If you have been on the pill for an extended amount of time (like if you are now 30 and have been on it since 18) your cycle could have changed a lot. You could have underlying issues that you haven't discovered because you were on the pill. Or you could come off of it and have a perfect 28 day cycle the first month. If you had any irregularity or issues before the pill they will more than likely still be present.
Most women who did not have an fertility issues before starting the pill will have a bump in fertility immediately after stopping. As shared by previous posters, it is very common to get pregnant within days of stopping the pill. It is also quite common to hyper ovulate your first month off of the pill which drastically increases your chances of conceiving fraternal twins. You should start a prenatal 6 months in advance of trying to conceive to make sure your body has stores of essential vitamins. There are plenty of healthy babies born to mothers who never took vitamins, but it really is important. My obgyn recommends just taking 2 Flintstones vitamins, it is the same as a prenatal and tastes great.
I stopped the pill 3 months ago to figure out how my cycle was running and I've only had one normal cycle. I wished I waited until I ready, it's almost been 2 months since my last but I think it's my thyroid acting screwy again.
I started prenatal vitamins 6 months prior. Stopped the pill the last day in January, got 2 periods and then a positive the last week in march. I say stop as soon as you are ready to be pregnant.
With DS I stopped about 7 months before TTC. We just used condoms. This time I stopped taking the pill in January and we are going to TTC next month, so 5 months. With DS we got pregnant right away, so we are thinking a few months off of the pill would be good.
My doctor told me to stop the pill, then give myself 2 normal cycles before I begin trying. Just be sure you are absolutely ready before you stop, and keep protected for those couple of months. Good Luck!
I stopped in March, but don't necessarily want to get pregnant til the summer (I'm a teacher w/o maternity leave, so the late spring is my goal). I figured this would give my body time to get back on track. In the mean time, I'm counting days to avoid my peak days, but if it happens it happens. I didn't notice any irregularities with my cycle last month.
I've also had a friend conceive the month after, so your body doesn't always need time to get back on track.
