Family bassinet

My mil informed me that she begged one of DH aunts to get the family bassinet back for us to use. She told me it has been in the family since 1880! Not sure how I feel about using this very old bassinet to put my new and fragile newborn in! It being so old I don't trust the stability and with how much it has been passed around between DH 11 aunts and uncles and now his cousins. Also I am Leary about the lead paint that is probably in it! I am also a interior designer and I have my own ideas as to what I want to use in the nusery. Ugh my brain is in a knot! My mil did something similar to this during our wedding planning 2 years ago! Not sure how to tell her that we don't want to use it?!

Well since it is your MIL, I'd say you should really talk to you husband about his feelings regarding the bassinet. If it has significance to him, then I would just accept it as a gift. Doesn't mean you have to use it solely. For me personally, I would

Absolutely not! Do not use a 100 year old bassinet. It has not been tested for suffocation or other hazards like a modern bassinet or crib would be.

Take it and use it for some pics or to put stuffed animals in. It's not worth ruffling family feathers over.

I definitely wouldn't use it. Like others have said, you have no idea about lead paint or suffocation issues. Also I don't know if there is any bedding/cushion but you don't know if there is mildew or mold inside.
