Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What came first, the sippy or the milk??

Hi everyone! My LO is not quite a toddler yet but I have been thinking greatly about this question and I'm hoping you can help. He'll be a year next month and I am trying to decide how to switch him to cow's milk and to a sippy cup (no more bottle). Which did you do first? How did it work for you? I'm a little concerned that doing both at the same time might be too much to handle and he might end up not drinking enough milk. At the same time, I also worry about putting cow's milk into a bottle and then having meltdowns once that is transferred into a sippy cup. So... what worked for you and your LO?

Re: What came first, the sippy or the milk??

  • I introduced a sippy cup with water at 6 months. It took him a while to "get it," but he was drinking from it by 9 or 10 months. We only do the straw kind.

Didn't start WCM until 11.5 months, and that has always been in a sippy, never a bot

  • Thank you! This is good to know. LO does drink water and juice from a sippy but I guess my nervousness is around changing the milk and giving it in a sippy at the same time. But maybe there is nothing to worry about if he is already used to a sippy...?

  • We introduced the sippy around 6 months, but she didn't get the hang of it until 8 months. I would put BM, water or sometimes apple juice in it. When she turned 12 months we tried a little whole milk. She hasn't had very much whole milk, but she takes it

  • It was a slow change. We started by dropping the morning bottle and just giving milk with breakfast. The next bottle to go was the lunch bottle, we replaced it with milk at lunch. We also let her have a cup of water all day, so she has that to sip on i

  • LO got a sippy of water at 6 months. I swapped the nipples on her bottle to 'training'  spouts. Then i swapped them to hard spouts. Then I mixed formula/milk until it was 100% milk. Then i swapped the bottles with a hard spout to a sippy cup since th
  • LO started getting soft spout sippies of water at about 6 months.

I switched to milk/formula combinations at 11 months and had him fully on milk by one year.  Then after that I switched to sippies and by 13 months we were on sippies 100% and

He still gets a bottle before nap & bedtime, but we're working

At 11 months, when he transitioned to a new room at daycare we started giving him his breastmilk in the straw cup.  It took about 3 days of "no bottles" before he was totally fin

  • My LO was drinking from a sippy at 6 or 7 months. The straw kind first; she took right to them once she realized you just suck in. Then we used the other kind when she got a little older. She was EBF and never really used a bottle though. She started gett
