Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Saying short phrases?

When do LOs start saying 2 or 3 words together? My babies say LOTS of single words but only say the same word back to back. Like bye bye, no no, night night. I feel like they gotta be getting close to saying little phrases and I guess I'm just excited. Ha ha!

Re: Saying short phrases?

  • I'm sure it depends on the child. DS has started in the last couple of weeks.

  • DD2 started using 2-word "sentences" around the 20-month mark. From what I understand, that is a skill Dr's like to see happen by the time kids reach 2 years old, so your girls still have plenty of time...

  • Mine will be 2 in July and just this last week started picking up on 2 words phrases.

She says: I do it, I sit, Where's Daddy, Who is it and What's that. All within like 4 days she learned those.

She honestly doesn't say a lot of other wor

  • Mine hasn't yet. But she also has a slight speech delay--enough to be noticeable but not enough to qualify, we had her evaluated in March.

She does have a lot more words then she used to--and majority of them are recognizable. She also has

  • DD is still only saying single words, no phrases.  She will very rarely combine something with mama - i.e. mama, nana - but I think that's more that she's trying to get my attention and then tell me that she wants a banana, not trying to make a short

  • The first thing I noticed my kid putting together on her own was "I wah pee" (I walk please, while I was carrying her) right around 22-23 months. (there are other phrases she said earlier, but only because she learned them from me - "there you are", "here

  • My son just started saying "Ollie, a dog" and "bowl, gurt"  (Ollie is our dog and gurt is yogurt, which we put in a bowl).  So cute and fun!  Oh, and he's 17 months!

  • I think this, like everything else with kids, is going to depend on the individual child and not so much the age.  I would wager that early talkers will probably start string together words/phrases/sentences earlier than later talkers.

  • I think it def depends on the child. My daughter can say sentences, like "Jacob, where are you?" (looking for her cousin) and "No, I want cheese." (that one was in response to me asking her what ELSE she wanted for breakfast). IDK if she is advanced in he
