Safety Post (Yeah, I can spell)

I know we are all aware of many safety hazards, but we are entering a new season with curious little ones.  I thought maybe we could share some safety tips we might not all be aware of or maybe some learned from our own childhoods.

Talk to older children about not climbing in rafters.  My sister at age 4 fell from the garage rafters onto a camper jack and was very lucky not to die or lose her eye.  She did have a concussion and a gash above her eye that required stitches.

5 gallon buckets, I know people will use them to wash cars, but don't leave them unattended with water, toddlers can drown in them.

Always know where your Lo is when backing up vehicles.  Make a point to walk around your car before you back out.

  • Good idea to post this thread, Penny.  Holy crap, I bet your parents were totally freaked out when this happened to your sister!

  • I was actually thinking of calling my county's water department to see if they can put a grate or something over the curb sewers in my neighborhood. The opening is large and I get nervous every time we walk by them.

  • We live in a one story home, but if we lived in two or more I'd be looking into window guards. That's something those of you with multi story homes may want to look into. Especially if you have low windows or furniture up against a window that your LOs ca
  • I will add in helmets. Our LO's are getting older and may start to explore tricycles or scooters. My DS wants to keep up with his sister a lot, so those things aren't uncommon at our house. I suggest getting them used to helmets very early on. It's saf

  • Strap furniture to the wall, including all dressers and tvs. DS is a climber and this is becoming a big issue.

Check backyards before letting your kiddos play. We have snakes, spiders, scorpions, wasps, etc. and a lot of kids can have major

  • Another thing about helmets:

Use them on your bikes but take them off at the playground or climbing trees.  Children can asphyxiate if they get caught up.
