Babies on the Brain

If you have more than one child...

How did you decide to have another?

My dilemma is that everyone keeps telling me my daughter needs a sibling. I'm debating the issue, but here are my issue with it all;

My pregnancy is high risk because I'm a type 1 diabetic. I had a pretty good pregnancy with my daughter and her birth was picture perfect! First diabetic to deliver at the hospital that's baby didn't have to get sent off to the NICU for monitoring!

I'm not sure I would feel the same about another child as I do about my daughter too. My mom's favorite is my sister. My grandmother's favorite is my aunt. My aunt's favorite is her son...

Plus I'm Jewish and I'm not sure I'd want to pay for more than one Bat Mizvah...LOL

I'm just worried I will have jinxed myself with my daughter and if I do get pregnant again it will be a horrible pregnancy and things won't turn out like they did with her. I have birth defects that run in my family (rare eye condition, deviated septum, etc) and she has none...

I always pictured myself as a one and done mom. Now I'm not so sure, but I would be waiting 4 years to have another baby if I decide to have one.

Re: If you have more than one child...

  • We currently have three little boys whom I adore and I can't wait to have more! I know from experience that the type of connection I have with each of my older two is different because they are different people. That being

  • We want Lucas to have a sibling on Earth to play with.

I'm a high risk pregnancy because of my cord failing with Aidan, but I was with Lucas and everything went fine. I'm sad that I can't play with Lucas the way that I used to, but I will be able

  • For me, my sister is one of my best friends. I have wonderful memories of playing together growing up.  (granted, we fought a lot too!) Still, she is one of the first people I call for advice, to celebrate, to cry, etc.  I wanted my children

  • People just need to butt out. Seriously.

As soon as you get married it is all "when are you having kids"

A week after having a baby it is all "when will you give her a sibling"

A week after second baby it is all "will you try for 3?"

  • If you haven't done so already, you should check out the One & Done: Only Child board. The women there have gone through a lot of the same dilemmas you are facing, but I think hearing their perspectives/experiences may ease some of your fear
  • Thank you ladies for all your advice! I will check out the one and done area. I'm single btw. My daughter's father couldn't hack it, so he's gone. Thanks ladies!

  • I'd think that if your first pregnancy went well, all the more reason this one will go well too.
