Need job advice

I was just promoted at my job in New York (yay!) BUT my husband matched at a medical residency program in California so he will be moving in early June. My first goal is to convince my job that I can work out of the San Fran office but if they say no should I:

1) Quit, move with my husband and be poor in CA (and look for a new job of course, a new job that will hate me when I tell them I am already pregnant).

2) Stay in New York as long as I can stand being alone, save money, and move when it gets to be unsafe to be alone and pregnant (maybe 6 months pregnant)? Then collect unemployment for 6 months (unless somebody hires me while I am showing, which is doubtful).

What would you do if you were me?

Re: Need job advice

  • A big thing to consider is that you can't quit and collect unemployment.  It's not there for people who willingly leave a job unless you are willing to fight that you were virtually forced to do so because of some unsafe or illegal work environment.

  • You can collect unemployment in New York if you are forced to quit because a spouse is relocated for work, so I can get unemployment. Thankfully!

  • I think its unfair to say that I would be "quit[ing] because their current work situation is not ideal for them." I would be quitting so that I could stay married to my husband. It seems unreasonable to think that I would live long term in another city

  • For me it would depend on what you do and your job prospects. If you have an in-demand career, then I would just move. But with the current economy, I'd most likely stay in NY and keep applying to other places.

Hopefully you'll be able to work fr

  • what a sucky situation, so sorry! It would be terrible to have to be alone while pregnant, although I know many women do it.  That's awesome that NY offers unemployment if a spouse is relocated - I would start looking for jobs now, but would def take

I'm not trying to start a huge debate but I feel that unemployment should be reserved for those who really need it

  • I actually went through a somewhat similar situation myself recently (not moving across state lines though). My husband found a good job in Bay Area, CA , my parents and brother's family live there and since I am pregnant we want to move down there. C

  • I was considered a contractor initially, now with promotion an employee. I was waiting for promotion to go through before asking them about working in another state.
