12 month old STTN, but hard to get down?

My DS just turned 1 year last week. About 4 weeks ago we sleep trained for middle of the night wake ups - he was waking 2-3 times a night and was impossible to get back down, so we did CIO and it worked wonderfully! He never cried more than 20 minutes, most times 5 minutes or less, and he has been STTN ever since. I'm not sure if it is related, but his daytime naps have gotten much longer since that too.

However, we still rock him to sleep at bedtime. It is taking longer and longer for him to fall asleep and he often tosses and turns in my arms like he is uncomfortable. I am thinking to sleep train for bedtime, but I am terrified it is going to mess up his STTN and his long naps.

Anyone sleep train for middle of the night wake ups and bedtime separately? Any advice or suggestions?

Thanks!!

  • DS was already trained for bedtime when I got him STTN, so I don't have experience with your exact situation. But I would recommend putting LO down without any rocking and doing CIO. It'll be rough, but once LO is asleep, they should still STTN. If not

  • I did bedtime CIO and once he STTN on his own a couple times, I sleep trained for any other wakings too.  His naps also drastically improved at that point also.

what does he do at nap time?  I would just do CIO again.

  • We rock him for both nap and bedtime, but nap time he is out quick! I'm almost thinking he is overtired maybe at bedtime.

Guess I'll try CIO, nervous though for some reason.

    Thanks!!

  • It actually sounds like he is overtired. Try moving bedtime up a bit and putting him down in the crib without rocking him. He may now do better at settling on his own.

  • I would try a little earlier bedtime as well.  And also put him down awake.  He may very well surprise you and be able to go to sleep on his own.  If he's STTN, then he is actually waking up a few times throughout the night already, but he'
