Shampoo and conditioner woes

I'm tying so hard to find a shampoo and conditioner to switch to. I am SO PICKY about my haircare products. I am a Matrix Biolage snob, but know I have to switch. Are there any pregnancy-safe salon-quality products? Hair stuff is the one thing I splurge on for myself (I don't wear makeup, don't paint my nails, etc.). My hair is really long and thick, and requires a lot of moisturizing. Something tells me this is going to be painful. :(

Uhm, I heard you're supposed to stay away from certain ingredients (sodium lauryl sulfate) which I'm 90% positive my shampoo has. https://pregnant.thebump.com/pregnancy/is-it-safe/qa/shampoo-conditioner-safe-during-pregnancy.aspx

I feel like I have to change EVERYTHING. I'm a super-savvy person with Google but man I am just aboard the fail boat on knowing all things preggers. :|

  • Ask your doctor before you change. The Bump, contrary to what people think, doesn't have an MD.Wink
  • lulz, totally agree.

Oh, and CRISIS AVERTED: My Biolage is paraben and lauryl sulfate free! BOOYAH! ;)

Yeah...I have used my normal shampoo/conditioner in the past and still will. Tresemme and Trader Joe's Eucalyptus/Peppermint/Tea Tree Oil.

I don't even bother with info/articles from thBump because half of it is bs, not well researched fluff articles. People are too paranoid. If you really want to live in a bubble...

I know what you're saying, but if I can make a few changes that will hopefully make it a more welcoming environment for meh bump, I shall do it. ;)

Most of this stuff is scare tactic stuff. I'm legit terrified to have a turkey sandwich from Panera. Harumph.

  • The Bump has an article that says to stay away from tap water.

    Tap water.

Should I shower in a mountain creek and only drink fairies tears?

  • I suggest you switch. They found tons of chemicals in the babies umbilical cord after mom's gave birth. This was caused because of the different soaps and shampoos and conditioners that were being used Throughout pregnancy, which contained different chemicals . A friend of mine introduced me to this company who makes the best shampoo, body wash, conditioner, facial toners and etc. Using natural ingredients. I tried it and honestly my hair has felt much healthier than it used to. Lolz my husband ended up using them too. If I were you, I would give them a shot. I think they're better than my old shampoos I used to buy.
  • It's not about living in a bubble, It's about how better you can make it for you and your child. I switched my shower head too with the Berkey water filtration system is only like 60 and my skin doesn't feel the way it used to. I changed my soaps and shampoo n conditioner. My body feels better less dry and more moist. This is my second child and I feel different ever since I switched. I actually signed up with the company that sells me my shampoos and conditioner and I honestly think it was the best choice I made. I still buy from them. That along with my Berkey, and we did our research before we bought from these two companies. Hey if you wouldn't eat the ingredients that are in your shampoos, why put them on your body?
  • I love The Bump community because the woman on here are great and I learn alot, But some of the articles freak me out. I have read that I can't drink coffee and use my shampoo. I am pretty sure my mom, sister and friends didn't change the shampoo that they used, plus  I am pretty sure my organix one is OKSmile.

  • I think PP have said it well but to the OP's second response I will reply,

Uhm, the fact that your pregnant has nothing to do with whether or not you choose to use products with those chemicals in them. They'd have the same effect or no effect pregnant or not. Some people choose to use more natural products with less chemicals because they feel those chemicals could be detrimental to health from long term use or exposure. Other people are perfectly comfortable using mainstream products that contain those chemicals. It's a matter of personal preference not pregnancy.
One article on the bump should not have that strong a sway on you personal philosophies nor your one source of information.
  • I happen to use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner simply because its better for your hair. The best cheap stuff is Loreal's sulfate free line. The best splurge is Jonathan sulfate free vegan shampoo and conditioner. Don't be surprised when it lather as easily as Matrix products.

All of this. I use my regular brand of shampoo. Its dumb to worry so much about it.

oh FFS. I smell Mommy Martyr. So, do you think you are better because you can eat your shampoo? I don't want to eat my cleaning products. I just want to wash my hair with them. I don't eat my natural soap made out of flowers either. So should I not use a perfectly organic soap made by hand? Your argument is ridiculous.

  • I read about all this stuff too with shampoos, make up and deodorant, etc. I am still using my Biolage, but I rotate it between using a natural shampoo too and try to wash my hair just every other day. I am also using natural deodorant on the days I don't think I'm going to sweat as much. The days I ride my horse, or if I'm wearing a silky material on a hot day, then I'll use my Secret outlast deodorant. Who knows if it really makes a difference.

I was just thinking, why would you even bother posting saying that you know you have to switch shampoo's before you even actually read the ingredients in your shampoo that you were questioning? Only to come back with, "Oh yay I JUST looked and I don't have to switch because of the ingredients!" Confused
  • At the risk of sounding naive, I've wondering this: if shampoos and facial washes are supposedly "so dangerous" for a developing baby, shouldn't we be dead by now? Apparently we've been absorbing these chemicals for 20+ years. How are we not defected by now? I dunno, that's just my 2 cents.

And rum cake without the rum, because otherwise you might get drunk and then your baby will get drunk.

  • You're missing the entire point. Water may be a chemical substance but it's not harmful in the long run. It keeps you hydrated. It'd be ignorant for a person to think, 'well everything is a chemical, therefore it's completely ok for me to use bleach and comet in my shower while I'm pregnant, because hey, everything is a chemical,' it doesn't work that way. You know that there are harmful chemicals that can cause abnormalities to an unborn baby.
  • Just because you're a microbiologist doesn't mean you completely understand what harmful chemicals can cause to your body. Many people are under this illusion that harmful chemicals 'aren't that bad.' it seems like people are opposed to the idea of switching to natural elements that leave less of an negative impact on your body. Why? If it's 'not that much different' than the shampoos you use daily with all the unknown Ingredients, why not switch and TRY something different for a while ? Is it that hard?
  • You're point is nonsensical. Mommy martyr? Do you even know what a martyr is? Apparently not. Maybe instead of letting your arrogance lead you, maybe you should try to understand what I'm trying to say.
  • You're *** ridiculous. First off you can't get a joke, don't respond. Seriously.

Because I saw a sodium sulfate, but it turned out to be laureth not laurel. Sorry.
