Babies: 6 - 9 Months

weight checkup

We just got back from our revisit with our pedi. At our 6 month appointment he wanted to see DS again a month later because he was concerned he wasn't gaining weight. At this visit DS has gained 7 ounces but he is in the third percentile and weighs about 15 pounds and 2 ounces

I feel as though I am doing something wrong

DS is breastfed 4 times a day and eats 4 solid meals a day and loves all foods, he eats about 4-6 ounces a food at a time. I was also a very small baby so I am not sure if this is something he got from me or if I am doing something wrong. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Re: weight checkup

  • Pedi suggested we go to a breastfeeding support group because they weigh him before and after and then to call our pedi after and tell him what they said. Other than that he said it sounds as though he is eating very well

  • I think your pedi gave a solid suggestion.

He is eating a lot of solids, maybe it's not caloric enough for him?

  • The pedi's suggestion is perfect. When they weigh him, they will know how many ounces of milk he is drinking per feeding. This might shed some light into whether he is taking in enough bm or not and whether supplementing is necessary or not.

  • This doesn't seem that small to me. There are a few Mom's on my board who at 6 months have babies that are 1-2 lbs smaller than yours. I honestly think Dr.'s get too worked up about weight and babies fitting into a category, especially BF babies. Did

  • No he didn't say he was malnourished he simply said he is not sure if it is nature he is just a small baby or nurture and he isn't getting enough

You may need to nurse him more or give him additional formula/expressed breastmilk.  At 7 months, DS still gets most of his nourishment from breastmilk.  I would estimate that he nurses and/or gets a bottle of breastmilk 8 to 10 times a day.&nbs

  • I wouldn't be too concerned. My DS was about that weight then and he picked up more. My pedi said that while he was on the smaller side, he was obviously healthy and bright eyed, so no worries.
