Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

International Travel/Flight with almost 2 year old

Hi,

Just looking for tips for travelling with my almost 2 year old over to Europe.  I will be doing a lap seat at 22 months old (can't afford to get him his own) and possibly going alone.  EEK!  Looking for tips on what to pack/bring and what NOT to (eg, how to pack LIGHT).  Going to Scandanavia, so the weather is unpredictable in the summer and I'll be bringing a range of clothes... Sad but necessary!

Also worried about a carseat and/or crib over there.  Can I rent a carseat from somewhere if I'm not renting a car?  Also, the bed thing.  He's really not able to sleep in a bed yet.  Was thinking of buying a pack and play (I can easily get a used one for $15) and leaving it there.  Can that count as my second piece of luggage if I check it?  Do the airlines still let you check 2 pieces of luggage, even?  Also, does a gate checked stroller (a) count as one of my luggage pieces or (b) run a really high risk of getting damaged?  Just curious.

Do you recommend direct or a stopover?  I read that it's better to stop partway to break up the trip but that seems counterintuitive...

Also, what about bringing things like diapers and snacks?  Seems like I could just buy when I get there, right?  I'll be there somewhere between 7 and 10 days.

Also, if there are any blogs or resources you recommend, feel free to pass them along.  Thanks in advance!

  • If you're staying in a hotel, they should have a PnP you can use.  Ours did in Belgium and The Netherlands.  You request it as part of your reservation.  For some of our hotels, we had to do it in the comment section of the online bookin

  • Karen had some great tips!  We just flew with both kids to Vietnam and the Philippines in Feb. at 3.5 and 1.5 years old.  That was 13 hours to Hong Kong (layover) and then about 4 hours to Vietnam.  I actually was glad to have a layover.

  • Scandinavia is *super* kid-friendly. Seriously, it puts the US to shame. Any hotel or vacation rental is going to have a PnP for you to use so don't worry about that. As PP mentioned, just put it in your reservation. If you're staying with friends, jus
