Speech delays?

Just back from Ds 18 month appointment. All told he's doing well, but as expected, we got a referral for his lack of talking. Not in a happy place right now between mom guilt and worry.

He seems normal to me other than preferring to communicate nonverbally. He looks me in the eye, laughs, engages with others...

Looking to hear from others who are or were in a similar situation ...

Maybe he just doesn't have anything to complain about so he doesn't feel the need. Einstein didn't speak until he was around 3...

I have nothing to add currently but hugs, though from all the hearing test failures and the Down Syndrome, DS might very possibly have speech delays. My heart is with you on feeling guilty. He might be almost 3w and not to there, but I still already feel

my niece also only started talking at 3- they were referred to a specialist/speech patholgist only around 2 1/2, but never used the services. She started talking at 3 and hasn't stopped since!

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I decided to get DS tested & he does qualify for a speech therapist.  The good news is that everything else came back in the normal range.  He has his first session tomorrow & I can let you know what

DD has her 18 month appt next Tuesday and I'm just curious what your pedi was looking for in terms of D's speech. Was it just specifically the number of words used or was there something more that led him to think there could be a delay?
