Natural Birth

Home birth question

Hi, ladies! I'm pg w/ my 1st and have known for years I'd like to have a home birth. I currently work as a Residence Director at a university, so that means we live in an apartment that is attached to the residence hall. For those of you who have had home births, would this kind of arrangement deter you from having a home birth? Our apartment is an ok size: living room, 2 bedroom, 1 bath, small kitchen/dining area. I'm more concerned about the noises I'll be making during labor. One thing that could possibly help is that I'm due Dec. 22, and most of my students will be gone for Christmas break at that point. Thought??

Re: Home birth question

  • It would deter me just because I wouldn't know how loud I was going to be!

It's ultimately up to you, but I would look for a birth center facility near you. (plus if you're renting, they might have weird rules, might want to check into that)

  • Not at all. Having lived in a residence hall, I can say that there were weirder noises than birth noises going on in there. Plus, you've got break as you mentioned and it's one day in the whole year. If anyone *did* hear you, it would be a great dialogue
  • We live in an apartment and we just let our attached neighbors know what was going to happen so if they did hear anything, they would know what it was. I might be a little embarrassed, but at the time of labor, what anyone could hear wasn't even on my min

  • This is an interesting question to me, as I worked as a student RD in college so I can somewhat envision the scenario.

One thought that occurred to me is...if your baby came at 38 or 39 weeks, would that be right during finals time?  That mi

  • I hadn't thought about giving birth during finals week! haha I'm not too concerned about girls hearing me in their rooms. Our apartment shares a wall with the first floor lobby. Above us is the 2nd floor lobby. Some girls could be studying in those areas,
  • It wouldn't bother me at all. But I wasn't vocal during either of my births since I tend to internalize things. I say go for it, but maybe keep a back up just in case you deliver early. GL!

  • It honestly wouldn't deter me at all, I'd say go for it. It is one day not a week you're going to be moaning for, and it's an important thing for you, if you want a home birth you can do it!
  • Casey, that's a good question. I would likely be able to hear some things from out in the lobby or outside our apartment windows if the students are still here, but I would have another RD covering for me as soon as I went into labor, so I would have my d
