We use an aquapac case when we go kayaking or down to the beach. protects the phone and you can use it through the case, so we put it in when we leave the beach house and don't have to worry about water, sand, sunscreen down at the beach.
It's been...4 years?...since my last trip to the beach - and when I finally do make my way back to one, the phone will stay in the car - but anyway, I have an otterbox for my kindle and given my experience with that, I will get one for every mobile device

I have a Lifeproof and it has literally saved my phone (from my 2 yo). It does make the slim iPhone 5 back into a bulky v4 style but again it's has been thrown, drinks and food spilled on it and the phone is alive!
