Cloth Diapering

bumgenius freetimes leaking - HELP!

Hello!  I'm a new mom and also new to CD'ing.  My son is 3 months old and our stash consists entirely of bumgenius freetime AIOs.  They worked well for the 1st month, then developed a musty/amonia smell.  I washed them in baking soda and vinegar a few times to no avail.  I tried using more detergent...no help.  I just tried blue dawn and that seems to have helped with the smell however over the last week or two we are now having nearly constant leaking in the front along the sides of the legs.

My son is big (probably 15+ pounds) and we snap the diapers pretty snug.  There are 3 rows of rise snaps: we use the middle row.  I don't think we could snap the diaper any tighter without causing discomfort.

The diapers leak within 2 hours, sometimes less.  I have some microfiber inserts (used from a friend) that I've been adding at night and that doesn't help either.

We have a standard washing machine and we use All Free & Clear detergent or Arm & Hammer (also free/clear).

We have a Planet Wise wet bag and we wash every other day.

I am at my wit's end! I don't want to have to head back to sposies...but we never had any leaks with them.

Do you think the diapers are just poor quality?  Are we doing something wrong?  I haven't tried stripping because we've only been using the diapers a month or so...didn't think we'd need to strip yet.

Anyone use freetimes care to share your routine/detergent and experiences?

TIA!

Re: bumgenius freetimes leaking - HELP!

  • How wet are the diapers when they leak? If they are really wet, then you need to change more often. If they aren't that wet, then it is a fit issue. I haven't used freetimes, so I cannot give more specific tips. Sorry.

  • Personally, I've neer had a leak with my freetime. I only have one, and I like it ok, but it doesn't get the best fit on my baby. Do you have other diapers in your stash? Its possible that the free time just doesn't work for your baby, you know? You could

  • I'm a lurker and fairly new to CDing, but I'm pretty sure the Free and Clear detergents are not recommended. You probably have build up and need to strip. Maybe someone more experienced can offer additional advice.

  • I'd say if they worked well for a month, you have some kind of buildup. I have heard baking soda can cause buildup if you have hard water. I'd try stripping, and then try a CD-specific detergent, like Rockin Green or Tiny Bubbles.

  • I use mostly Freetimes and have never had issues like that. I agree with pp, sounds like your wash routine needs tweaking. What is your exact routine?

  • Definitely sounds like detergent build-up, especially with the funk smell.  Maybe try a packet of RLR and then a different detergent?  I have been very happy with my Country Save powder but we have soft water.
  • You should not be using either of the detergents you mentioned, especially if they are liquid. I'm going to guess you have a detergent build up. You can strip by doing several super hot washes w/out soap or w/blue dawn. Then hot wash until no more bubb

  • Change your detergent. You most likely have build up from your free and clear detergent. Our stash consists mostly of BG 4.0's through the day and I used F&C detergent to start. About 3 months in our diapers started leaking. I tried everything, but no

    Thanks everyone for your responses.

    Here's our routine:

We throw wet/dirty diapers in our wet bag (we dunk and swish the dirties) and we wash every other day.  We pre-wash in cold without detergent, then a hot wash with arm and

  • It does sound like a repelling/build up issue to me too. I use Tiny Bubbles detergent for our mildly hard water. I bought it online from Costco.com. I would hot water strip your diapers and switch detergents.

Ok, the diapers are stripped!  It took 5 hot washes before the bubbles went away, so there obviously was some build up.  I really hope this solves our problem.  We're using Earth's Best sposies until we receive our new detergent (Charlie
