Late naps interferring with bedtime (Kind of long)

DS napping schedule has been crazy for the past few months.

He usually goes to bed between 6:30-8:00 and wakes up between 6:30-8:30 every morning, usually depending on if he takes a nap or not.

Sometimes, he takes a nap early between 10:00-12:00 noon; although other times, he may not take a nap at all. Or like today, he didn't want to take a nap early; he wanted to go down for a nap at 4:30. We pushed him to stay up, because it's so complicated dealing with late naps & bed time. We finally gave in at 5:00 and let him take a nap. Now it's past 6:30 and he isn't showing any signs of waking up anytime soon. I don't know whether to wake him up or simply let him sleep.

Is anyone else having a problem with late naps and bedtime? Or napping troubles period??
I would like to get him on a more regular schedule; but he demands sleep when he needs it and refuses it when he doesn't want it. Is it best that I just let him run his own sleeping schedule?
I would love to hear how you handle this situation and hear any suggestions! Thanks ladies!

  • Ds is on almost the same schedule as your lo. When he gets sleepy early like that, I just put him down for the night and anticipate an early morning.

  • If you want consistency, give him one nap in the middle of the day, and that's it.  Between 12-1, aim to put him down.  Don't allow him to sleep past, say 3pm.  Then begin to have a more regularly occuring bedtime, around 7-8.
