Pacifiers??

My daughter is 2weeks old today (already!) and I am exclusively breastfeeding.  She cries inconsolably much of the time. I have been told not to give a baby a pacifier until 6weeks of age as this could cause confusion and interfere with breastfeeding. That said, up to now my daughter has been latching properly, though I usually have to make her relatch three times before we can settle in fr the feeding. She s gaining weight at a good rate and has been filling her diapers well. What are your thoughts/experiences? Thanks!

  • My son was given a pacifier in NICU before I could nurse and we breastfed successfully. I even gave him a couple bottles of expressed milk. We're nursing just fine.

It can cause nipple confusion, doesn't mean it will. Try

  • EBF here...we gave it to him around 2 weeks.  He definitely prefers the boob and actually doesn't like the pacifier much.  He'd rather suck on a finger.

  • I have a 2 weeker as well, gave him a paci at 3 days old. We EBF, no problem. If three times is the most you have to try to get him to latch, that's wonderful. I've definitely had times where I had to try way more than that but we always figure it out. I
  • If you're going to wait 6 Weeks... Why give one at all?? We've chosen not give a paci.. I hated with DS1 that he constantly spit it out at night... And i'm convinced we got lucky with DS1 when we got rid of it. We went cold Turkey with no.problems.

  • My mom's best friend is a pediatrician and she is a huge fan of pacifiers- specifically the Nuk brand.  I told her I was going to wait due to nipple confusion and she told me to hush up and provide the comfort that my baby needs.

  • My daughter is 3 weeks old tomorrow (Ack!)  Yesterday was the first time we gave her a pacifier to sooth.  She seems to still be latching just fine!  It made for a much calmer evening, which seemed to help her sleep well last night. Also, I
  • We gave DD a pacifier at 1 week because she was crying uncontrollably every night and using me as a human pacifier. Giving her the paci was the best decision ever! We were finally able to get a little sleep and we all felt much better. DD has had no probl

  • I waited until 4  weeks but only because everything I read said to wait as not to cause nipple confusion. but everythings been fine since giving it to her.  it definitely soothes her which is a nice break sometimes!
  • I'm sure there are people out there, but I've never heard/read anyone post about their baby actually having nipple confusion after a paci. A LC that I met when I had my first DS said that she thinks nipple confusion is a crock =)

I'll give you a different perspective on this from everyone else... my son also cried a ton and wanted to suck constantly, so we gave him a pacifier just a couple of days out from being home from the hospital.  We were breastfeeding (still are), and
