Spoiled?

Last summer my parents told me they wanted to buy my boys a swing/slide set.  I was like "yea, ok, thanks!"  DH later told me that hes didn't like the idea.  There are some on sale right now and my parents were about to buy one and I told DH.  He got so mad at me!  He says that I'm spoiled, our kids will be spoiled, that the swing set is a waste of money and that I should've told my parents "thanks but no thanks."

My parents were the ones who brought up the swing set in the first place.  I never asked for it.  And I thought it was ok for grandparents to spoil their grandkids, no?  Is DH right?  Should I just tell my parents that its a nice gesture but no thanks?

Re: Spoiled?

  • Puhleese! That's exactly what grandparents are for. I really don't see your DH's reasoning at all. If its something they want to do and if you have the space for it, why not? I would be so grateful if my parents did that.

  • I kind of think your H is overreacting. It's a sweet gesture on your parent's part and I think he needs to chill a bit. One big gift from the g-parents once in awhile isn't going to spoil anyone.

  • I think this is about more than a swing set. Maybe a pride thing? I see nothing wrong with the gift offer. If it was grandparents offering to buy a car for a teen flunking out of HS then yeah I could see the issue. Hopefully a compromise can be

  • I would SO take the swing set!  I don't think that is a waste of money at all.  Everyone I talk to says a swingset is a great investment, especially early on - like now!  It's not like they are buying a toy that is frivolous and over the

  • Get the swingset!

If I could afford one, or my parents would by one for J I would have been so grateful.

  • To me spoiled = bratty.  Just because kids have a lot of nice things doesn't mean they'll automatically be brats.  It's the parents that indulge their children with every single thing they want without any type of appreciation in return that are

I used to be a big deal.  Now I'm just old.
  • I agree with PP's. That's what grandparents are for. As long as you guys set the limits once in awhile, they will be fine!

  • I would definitely accept the swing set!  It's a thoughtful gesture from your parents and there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't graciously accept their gift.

  • Ok, maybe I am spoiled....but I consider a swing set to be a pretty standard kid toy.  Now if they were buying them a car, that would be another story.  Think of all of the creative play, gross and fine motor skills, processing and learning that
