Crib Bumpers...

Hi ladies..

So my MIL is making all our baby sheets, quilt, bumper pads etc...Well I read that bumper pads can cause suffocation and prevents proper air flow which can cause SIDS. I have never heard of this before. Sounds scary. Should I definetely avoid them? I would not ever want to put anything in a crib that could harm a baby, just wanted to know if everyone else has heard about this?

  • Avoid them, it's not worth the risk.

  • I didn't order bumpers with my bedding....it's so not worth the risk. Not to mention, it saved me $200

  • I know Maryland just banned them.  Here the Maryland government site detailing the ban and their reasoning behind it: https://dhmh.maryland.gov/SitePages/crib-bumper.aspx

  • We didn't put bumpers on DD's crib until she was 1. We plan on waiting this time around too!

  • Don't bother, you won't need them. I'm surprised you haven't heard, they started telling people not to use the, before my oldest was born 16 years ago. Around the time the back to sleep campaign started.
  • Yeah just have her make other cute things like a crib skirt or something avoid them there not needed. We actually use the bumper set that came with my sons bedding set as a teether rail cover .
  • We dont use them, even now that my DD is rolling all over the crib and banging into the sides.  I would rather her get a leg stuck between the slats (which she does not seem to mind) than take the risk with bumpers.

  • I, too, am surprised you've never heard this before.  But at least you did now.  No, you should not use a bumper.  Nor should you use a quilt, blanket, etc.  You can swaddle in the beginning, or use the wearable blankets (a sleepsac

  • Our bedding came with one and its still in the plastic! We honestly have never missed it. Plus after the suffocation risk is lessened there's then the climbing risk. Your baby will sleep safely just fine without anything except a fitted sheet in the bed.
  • I would avoid the crib bumper pads all together.  They have caused several infant deaths due to suffocation.  Also, when I used no bumpers at all my son would wake up cranky with his limbs caught in the bars of the crib.  When I used the me
