Fluid in the ear

What is anyone's experience with fluid in the ear/ ear infections/ tubes? DS had a persistant ear infection for about a month and has had fluid in the ear for about 3 months now.  We went to the Dr. and he said it could be affecting his hearing.  We'll get it checked at his 12 month apt. but I'd love to hear from moms with first hand experience on this.
