Nursing on one side per session?

For those of you who nurse on one side only per session, do you pump on the other to keep up your supply? DD is starting to spread out her feedings a bit (every 3 hours) so if she were to nurse on one side each time, that means the other breast wouldn't be nursed on for about 5-6 hours. Do I have to worry about my supply dropping then if I don't pump?

Re: Nursing on one side per session?

  • I generally pump the other during the morning feedings, and occasionally during the middle of the night feeding(s) if I am feeling full.  I don't usually pump during the afternoon & evening feedings as my supply dwindles during the day, and she needs the extra milk from having it buildup for 5-6 hours.  I pump both sides when she gets her last bottle of the night.

    So - I pump:

Middle of the night feeding - occassionally pump one side

2nd middle of the night feeding is usually done lying in bed, so no pumping

2 morning feedings I pump one side

Last feeding of the day - pump both sides, baby gets bottle.

  • I don't pump the other side except for at night, but DD didn't start spacing out her feedings that much during the day until 4 months or so.

  • I do after the first feeding in the morning and sometimes once mid-day if I'm feeling too full.

  • I don't, but DS is still eating every 2 hours.
  • i used to pump after each feeding in the first month to get my supply up. if you are working on a stash i would still pump frequently. but now i don't except in the morning when i first get up and at night before i go to bed.  she STTN so my supply stays low during the night.

you dont have to worry much about your supply if you don't pump so frequently.  all it will do is level off your supply

  • I nurse DD on only one side at a time. I don't pump, and I don't have a supply issue. You have a growth spurt coming around the corner and she will most likely start cluster feeding again, which will stimulate you to make more. And you don't have to feel "full" to have enough milk, just so you know. :)

    BTW, your DD is beautiful!

  • I nursed DD that wa for a year and never had a supply issue. Your body will adjust to what it needs.

If you do feel like it's lacking, then you can always start to pump after each nursing. But really, you should be fine.

  • I don't pump the other side. My body has adjusted and I do not have a supply problem. Your body will make what your baby needs.

  • I do during the a.m. and day, but not after I've gone to bed. My LC said I don't have to but recommended doing so to build up my freezer stash in anticipation of my return to work. She said that the stress of going back to work, no matter how much you like your job, often impacts your milk supply.
