PCOS? What happens now?

Lately I havn't been feeling so well. I have been having strange bleeding, abdominal pain, bloating, and the feeling of pressure on my cervix. My period was late and then when it did come it was weirdly light. I've also been feeling consistently nauseous. I saw my doctor a few days ago and I had an u/s this morning. i have the mirena IUD so I thought there was something going on with that. The u/s revealed that my IUD is in place, but I saw 3 or 4 cysts on my right ovary. The u/s tech wasn't allowed to say anything but I know my ultrasounds (i wont go into how, but trust me I do. plus i saw her put the blue dotted line circles around each of them ) I dont know if the cysts have anything solid. i just saw them on the ultrasound  for 20 seconds or so before she turned the screen away from me when she noticed i was looking. I am waiting to hear back from my doctor. My husband and I want to try for our second child in October of this year. What will most likely be the treatment? Will they even do anything but watch and wait at first? I was under the impression that multiple cysts in one ovary is a diagnosis of pcos but I have no experience in this. I guess im just looking for a little bit of info from someone with experience. What in your personal experience is the next likely step? Surgery? Medications? I'm assuming that because the cysts are causing me pain and discomfort they will at least attempt to make them go away.  I'm just very nervous and looking for some answers. I know my doctor will provide the answers in due time but i'm just not very patient.

  • You really need to wait and talk to your doctor instead of freaking out. 3-4 cysts is NOT a diagnosis of PCOS. Most PCOSers have ovaries with dozens of cysts and then the dx is confirmed by bloodwork and many other symptoms.

  • I have PCOS. I currently take 1500mg of Metformin daily and have been losing weight. It's no big deal. They tend to go away on their own. If you have 3-4, I wouldn't be worried at all.

  • from my experience and the way it was explained to me. PCOS cysts are different in the sense that they appear in the ultrasound looking like a string of pearls rather than individual cysts. Also, with PCOS you usually have additonal systems such as acne,
  • Wait for your doctor.

As for light periods, some that don't come at all, etc. that is VERY common with the Mirena.  I had a Mirena for a little over two years and never had to wear more than a panty liner for my "periods".  Once

I have PCOS, and I agree with PP. Just because you have multiple cysts, it does not mean you have PCOS. That being said, only your doctor  can diagnose you, so wait and hear what he has to say. If you do end up having PCOS
