Leah or Emma?

Name gaming with my husband here, and just curious for your opinion? What I've gotten so far on these is that people think Emma is too popular, and Leah isn't pretty enough...I love both names, and especially love that Emma is German, Leah is in the Bible. Which do you like better?

Re: Leah or Emma?

  • Leah. I used to love Emma but I've fallen out of love with it... I don't really know why

  • Emma is one of my all time favorite girl names.  I don't know anyone named Emma IRL.  Leah is pretty too, but just okay for me.  I know SO many Leah's though.

  • Tough choice!  I think I prefer Emma.  I actually think Leah is becoming increasingly popular.  I don't think Emma is as popular as it was back in 2004 (Ross & Rachel).  Both are lovely names though!

  • Chattychiqa: yeah, Leah's story is a little on the downer side, but I like it because I've got a thing for the underdog, plus at the end of the day she is the first wife of Israel, and matriarch to half the tribes of Isreal. I'm a minister, and I took a y

  • I love Emma. It is a family name for us, but our last name is super common, so we went with Emilia.

That said, I think the name Leah is beautiful as well!

  • Leah, definitely.  They are both very nice names, but Leah is underused, and I share your perspective on her as a biblical character.

  • My DH is stuck on Emma and I'm willing to compromise with Emilia with the nn Emma as an option.  I think Leah is a very pretty name and I love Biblical names.  I would say Leah unless you were willing to use Emma as a nn for a full name.
  • Both names seem really popular to me, but I like Emma better.

  • I'm a Lea. Its a different way to do Leah, which is a popular name where im from.

I love my name, I get a lot of compliments on it. I have always had some issues with people being confused on pronounciation but I love it just the same.

I love both of these names. I have loved Emma since about 1995! I actually find myself liking the alternative spell
  • I've always been bored by Leah. Not a fan. That said, I have never thought Emma aged well, so it is kind of a wash for me.
  • I love Leah!
