Homeschooling

2 year old curriculum

I really want to start a more focus play based learning system for my son.  I am thinking of doing a letter and number each week or something and activites to go with it.  I have looked at blogs and the 1+1 site a little bit but im wondering it there is something available that can be ordered that has weekly lesson plans that are simple to use.  I am home with him during the day but work evenings so I find I don't get a lot of downtime to search the internet and to print things off.

Looking for either a kit that can be mailed to me or a website where I can print off a package of plans each week.  I find a lot of what I have been looking atis above his abilities and for older toddlers.  He currently doesn't know any letter or numbers.  Thanks.

Re: 2 year old curriculum

  • Personally, I don't think children need to learn letters or numbers at 2, or 3, or even 4 for that matter.  Having said that, My Father's World has a toddler curriculum that might work for you.  I have the curriculum booklet in front of me and it doesn't look like they learn letters, but they have some number activities.  It's also play based, which I really like.  This is my first year homeschooling and I have never used this curriculum, but plan to next year for my oldest.

    Married to J since 5/05, Mommy to T (10/08), L (08/10) and C (02/13) who was born at home.

  • I wouldn't worry about an actual curriculum at 2. My daughter is almost 2 and i'm teaching her letters and numbers without any special books or anything.

She does watch some leapfrog, when we color/draw I practice letters and shapes with her, she has a few awesome leapfrog toys that teach her letter sounds, we have puzzles, and we read a loooot of books. Her favorites are the lift the flap ones and any interactive book. We don't use any actual curriculum.

She knows almost all of her letters when pointing randomly out of order (so I know it's not just memorization from the abc song), she can count to 10, she knows some of her colors, and she already pretends to read even following her finger along the words. You can teach them so much just through play.It doesn't hurt to get curriculum books or whatever but learning through play is still important.

This is an amazing blog. I have a few books that I've been pulling ideas from: Slow and Steady Get Me Ready, More Than Magnets, The Complete Resource Book: An Early Childhood Curriculum, The Ordinary Parent's guide to Teaching Reading, and Not! The Same Old Activities for Early Childhood. I was able to get them all through the state library system and decided that they were all worth buying (used, of course!).

  • Yeah 2yos do not need structure to learn
Jen - Mom to two December 12 babies Nathaniel 12/12/06 and Addison 12/12/08
  • Kumon has some books like mazes, easy coloring that my 2-3year old loved to do.  Mostly we just read and read and read.  My youngest loved flashcards, animal, transportation, actions, shapes,etc...
  • Ditto on the no structure.
