Sunblock and insect repellant

What's the safest sunblock and insect repellant to use on an infant under 6months? Are there any all natural homemade insect repellants that you have made? DD is currently 2 months old.

  • You aren't supposed to use any sunblock, etc. on a child under 6 months of age.  You can buy SPF clothing for her (long sleeves, hat that covers the back of the neck, and even a pair of shorts).  I have to think about this stuff, too, b/c DS will be 3.5 months when we go to the beach.

  • Once you're LO is 6 months old, I recommend Badger Sunscreen - it's organic and rated 1 on the EWG Skin Deep Guide to Sunscreen.  Badger also has a sunscreen/bug repellent that is all natural/organic as well that we've used and it works great but again, your little one needs to be 6 months old.  When our son was younger than 6 months, we used a large sunhat, sunglasses and full length sun suit to protect against the sun:

  • You can use the honest company sunscreen on babies under 6 months. I haven't used it, yet, but am planning on making the purchase for the summer.
  • I use Ava Anderson's sunscreen and bugspray - EVERY single product that Ava makes is a 0-1 on the ewg database. Those are the two products that introduced me to the brand in the first place -- because safe versions are so hard to find. I will be using the sunscreen on my 12-week old this summer - it's that safe. No nanoparticles, uva/uvb protection, and it rubs in well. And the bug spray is technically edible (although I wouldn't recommend it) - again, zero harmful chemicals, and it works.
